EAST NEWARK –
This community has done some late spring planting.
In less than two days, Louis Barbatto Landscaping, a Holbrook, L.I., contractor planted no fewer than 120 trees around the borough, Mayor Joseph Smith said.
About 15 left over from the original order are being kept in reserve in case of special requests from property owners, Smith said.
Roughly equal numbers of two types of trees were distributed around the borough: Japanese Silk Lilac and American Hornbeam, according to administrative aide Brigite Goncalves.
Horticulturists describe the Japanese Lilac as a very hardy, heavily flowering tree with small fragrant white flowers. It typically grows to 15 to 25 feet in height and 10 to 15 feet in width.
