KEARNY – The first thing we noticed when we arrived at Gunnell Oval, aside from
the bevy of kids in bright yellow T-shirts, was the dog. A massive German Shepherd, obviously with unadulterated German Shepherd bloodlines dating back to the Visigoths.
His name was Rommel, and we learned from his handler/ partner, Officer Eric
Petersen of the Jersey City Police Department Bomb Squad, that the 9-year-old canine had come from Hungary, where apparently the best bomb-sniffing dogs are bred. (They learn English quickly, though, and bark without a hint of an accent.)
