Bloomfield
Job Haines Home, 250 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield, will host Olympic Games on Friday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. The event will include relay races and an ice cream social. All events are free of charge. Communication: The Key to Understanding Behaviors, a program for caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21,  from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Job Haines Home, 250 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield. Effective immediately, the Bloomfield Public Library will be closed on Sundays.  Beginning on Oct. 3 library hours will change to:  Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.,  Thursdays and Fridays:  11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and  Saturdays:  9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new schedule is a response to economic necessity. The library announces that effective Sept. 19, the price of both computer printing and photocopying will increase to 20 cents per page.
Bloomfield Public Library announces one-on-one computer tutoring sessions will resume on Sept. 19.  Learn the basics of how to use a computer, word processing or Internet. Kearny
The Salvation Army, 28 Beech St., Kearny, is offering computer classes on Monday and Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. A $30 fee is charged per 12 hours of instruction. The classes cover basic computer skills (mouse, keyboard, Internet), email, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Lyndhurst
The Lyndhurst Health Department will be assisting with applications for disaster relief food stamp assistance on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursday, Sept. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. The goal of this program is to make sure that people who have been severely affected by Hurricane Irene have money for food. This assistance is for individuals not currently receiving food stamps. Residents from Lyndhurst and surrounding towns are welcome to apply for this emergency state benefit.
Please bring proof of ID. Applicants will be asked for their monthly income, bank assets, and disaster related expenses/losses. The disaster application eases requirements around documents necessary to apply. Those approved will receive a one-time benefit. The amount received will depend on family size; it will be applied to a card similar to a debit/credit card for the purchase of food items. If you already receive food stamps, you should not apply for the emergency program. Please call (201) 368-4200 for further information.
Mary Lou Mullins’ monthly bus trip to Atlantic City schedule is as follows: Sundays, Sept. 25, Oct. 30 and Nov. 27. All trips will be to Resorts Casino. Cost is $25 with cash returned of $22. North Arlington
North Arlington Elks Lodge #1992 will conduct its annual fund drive for physically disabled children all-day Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18. Members will be out at locations throughout North Arlington to collect donations from local businesses and residents.

Nutley Public Library’s Pen to Prose Writer’s Group will meet on Monday, Sept. 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Read works-in-progress, share accomplishments, critique works, give writing instruction, and provide encouragement and inspiration to aspiring authors. The group is free and open to the public.
A jewelry workshop with Deborah Ambrosio will be held at the library on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Create a beaded necklace to take home. Since materials will be included, registration is required and is limited to 15 people.
The library offers Babygarten for infants and toddlers (babies from birth to 22 months) and their caregivers on  Mondays, Oct. 3, 17, 24 and 31 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The program includes stories, nursery rhymes and playtime. Registration is required.
One Book Nutley, Reading Together book discussion program will be held at the library on Monday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. This program will feature a discussion and book signing with Brad Parks, author of “Faces of the Gone.” Copies of the book are currently available at the library. This program is free and open to the public.
Taming the Mouse, a beginning level class on how to use a computer mouse, is scheduled at the library for Friday, Oct. 7, from 10 to 11 a.m. Registration is required and limited to eight people per class. This is a single session class and will be meeting on two different dates. The next session will be Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 7 to 8 p.m.
