June 20

At 1:58 a.m., officers responded to an attempted burglary at 46 Eugene Place. The resident told police that he went to bed at midnight and was woken by his daughter at 2 a.m. who told him that their alarm system had been activated. He noticed that the front door jam was cracked and splintered. Police are investigating.

A Kearny woman known to Belleville Police for having an outstanding warrant was arrested after she was spotted riding a bicycle near Washington Ave. and Holmes St. at 11:48 p.m. Therese Mahazam, 52, of Kearny, was arrested for a $500 warrant out of that town. She was held pending retrieval from Kearny authorities.

June 17

Officers were summoned to the Belleville Motor Lodge at 371 Washington Ave. at 1:58 p.m. on a reported overdose. The victim, staying in room 65 told police that she took a handful of prescribed medication because she felt depressed. She requested medical treatment and was transported to Clara Maass Hospital. At 9:11 p.m., officers responded to the corner of Joralemon St. and Union Ave. on a report of a motor vehicle accident. At the scene, they spoke with an operator of one of the vehicles and detected a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. The man, Miguel Angel Chamaro- Cruz, 42, of Yonkers, N.Y., failed a sobriety field test and was charged with D.W.I. and issued several motor vehicle summonses.

June 16

At 12:48 a.m., officers responded to Porto Restaurant and Bar at 369 Washington Ave. on a report of a missing purse. The woman told police that she had given a friend a small wrist purse to hold in her larger purse. When she went to retrieve the purse later in the evening, it was missing from her friend’s bag. Police are investigating.

Officers were detailed to 89 Magnolia St. at 11:30 a.m. on a suspicious person call. When they arrived, they observed a man “staggering and leaning on a vehicle for balance.” As they checked the man’s credentials, a cigarette pack fell from his pocket. In it, police found two glassine envelopes that they suspected contained heroin. They also found one Xanax pill. Paul Miller, 46, of Long Island, N.Y., was charged with three counts of possession of drugs, and transported to Clara Maass Hospital. He was later released.

Officers were patrolling the area of Cleveland St. at 7:52 p.m. when they observed two males on a bicycle coming off of the railroad tracks. When they stopped the duo at the corner of Washington Ave. and Mill St. for an identification check, one of the men tossed something over the railing into the Second River. The object appeared to be a clear bag containing a green vegetative substance thought to be marijuana. The individual stated that he threw the bag of weed over the fence because he was scared. The man was also found with a small suspected drug pipe disguised to look like a cigarette. Ramone E. Cruz, 31, of Newark, was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to give drugs to law enforcement. He was later released.
