Dorothy L. Cupka

Dorothy L. Cupka, 87, of Kearny, died on May 24 at her home.

A service was officiated on Wednesday, May 30, at the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. Interment was in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny.

Mrs. Cupka was a key punch operator with Prudential Insurance Company, Newark, for eight years, retiring many years ago.

She was the daughter of the late David and Katherine Stoever Dick; beloved wife of the late Joseph A. Cupka; mother of Donna and Stephen Cupka; sister of the late Andrew Dick and Jay Budnick; grandmother of Kristen Payne, Wyatt (Amy) Kraft and Meadow Linskey; great-grandmother of Phoenix, Avelinn and Jericho and sister-in-law of Alice Dick and Russ Budnick.

In lieu of flowers, the family accepted donations at the funeral home.

Modesta del Valle

Modesta del Valle died on May 26 at home. She was 85. Born in Cuba, she lived in Paramus before moving to Bloomfield 10 years ago.

Wife of the late Rogelio del Valle, she is survived by her son Roger and nieces and nephews Luis E. Gonzalo, Maria Elena Gonzalo Mariele Gonzalo and Aida Hernandez, along with many other relatives and friends.

Mildred E. DeVivo

Mildred E. DeVivo, 96, of Oakland, Calif., formerly of Kearny, died on May 26.

A Mass of Christian Burial was officiated on June 4, at St. Stephens Church, Kearny. Arrangements were by the Wilfred Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. DeVivo was born in Harrison and lived in Kearny before moving to Oakland, CA in 2004. She was a homemaker and a member of The Benstead Senior Citizens, Kearny.

She is the beloved wife of the late Frank DeVivo; mother of Paul F. (Diane) DeVivo and the late Michael and Peter DeVivo; sister of Claire Gloshinski and the late Anthony and Albert Sylvester, Mary Capuano and Anna Wiltsey.

Joseph K. Grusenski

Joseph K. Grusenski, 86, of Harrison died on May 25 at his home.

A Mass of Christian burial was officiated on Thursday, May 31, at St. Anthony’s Church, East Newark. Arrangements were by the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Entombment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Mr. Grusenski was a building maintenance supervisor with Mutual Benefit Life, Newark for 20 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 559, Harrison. He was also an avid bowler.

He is the husband of the late Veronica Baranowski Grusenski; father of Diane (Doug) Lescota and Susan (David) Nankivell; brother of Bernard Grusenski, Connie Capozzi, Vicky Karczewski and the late Stanley Grusenski; grandfather of David (Andrea) Nankivell, Nicole (Michael) Longo and Daniel Nankivell and great-grandfather of Michael, Allie, Alexa and Brielle.

Paula “Maggie” Hoar

Paula “Maggie” Hoar (nee Gangichioda), 59, a lifelong resident of North Arlington, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 2.

Maggie was born in Newark, the only child of the late Joseph and Lucy. She graduated from North Arlington High School and had been employed for Comcast for 15 years. Most of Maggie’s life was devoted to her passion for gardening, cooking, love for animals and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 20 years Bob, loving daughter Cyndi Domerstad (Felice Spina), longtime friend William Kesner, and her two dogs Lucy and Murphy.

Paula was predeceased by her first husband Robert McDonald.

Maggie’s vibrant, loving and joy filled spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The funeral will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave, Harrison, on Wednesday, June 6, at 9:30 a.m. The funeral Mass will be held at Queen of Peace Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m., followed by a private cremation. Friends may call on Wednesday from 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Passaic Animal Shelter, 13 Benson Court Passaic, N.J. 07055 in her memory. A burial of her cremains will take place at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

May K. Hom

May K. Hom died on May 29. She was 77. Born in China, she lived in Brooklyn before moving to Kearny.

Private arrangements are by the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home in Kearny. Mrs. Hom owned Home Laundry in Kearny.

Wife of the late Wing Hom, she is survived by her children Jeanne Burns, Alice Hom Yee, Andrew Hom and Elaine Hersch and five grandchildren.

David Kornas

David Kornas, 55. died tragically on May 25, after sustaining injuries resulting from an industrial accident.

He is survived by the greatest loves of his life, his wife Kathleen (nee Walsh); children Christine Columbo and her husband Tommy, David Kornas and his wife Donna (nee Karolasz) and Brian Kornas and his wife Dana (nee Pryblick); his three grandchildren whom he loved to take out on various adventures, Madison Anne Kornas, Emily Marie Kornas and Logan David Kornas. He also leaves behind his brother Joseph Melione and his wife Judy and all of his brother and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews and his dear friends. He was a great man who touched the lives of many, he will be truly missed.

Dave was born in Jersey City, and was a lifelong resident of Kearny.

He proudly served in the N.J. Army National Guard for 11 years.

Mr. Kornas was a supervisor at Hummel Machine and Tool Company in Kearny where he had worked for the past 36 years. David was the first troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 305 at St. Stephen’s Church.

Frances M. Lawrence

Frances M. Lawrence “Fanny” died on May 24 at home. She was 98. Born in New York City, she lived many years in West New York before moving to Kearny eight years ago.

Mrs. Lawrence was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Exempt Fire Fighters, The Seniors and St Mary’s Golden Age all in West New York.

Fanny is the wife of the late Joseph “Dadda” Lawrence and is survived by her children Dolores Schwed, Dorothy Phillips, Frances Weeks, Kathleen Lawrence and Mary Jane Measso. Also surviving are 23 grand, 27 great and four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughters Elizabeth Harrigan and Florence Lawrence.

Mary Ellen O’Boyle

December 23, 1919 to May 30, 2012

Mary Ellen O’Boyle,, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, in So. Pasadena, Fla. She was formerly of Harrison.

The funeral was conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, on Saturday, June 2. A funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church, Harrison, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.

She was the beloved sister of the late Ann Patricia O’Boyle Burns who passed away in 1968. Ann’s late husband Joseph Burns passed away in 1997. She was also predeceased by her longtime, dear friend Casimer (Casey) Leszczak (Belleville) as well as her dear cousin William (Bill) O’Boyle of Pittston, Pa.

A beloved aunt, Mary Ellen is survived by her nephew Joseph Burns (Tina), her nieces Mary Burns Surdy (Jerry) and Kelly Burns Shemenski (Joe). She was also a great-aunt to Brian Burns (Amy and their son Logan), Brennan Burns (Stacy and their children Kaitlyn and Colin) and Kelly Burns (Michael Smith).

“Mame” will be missed by her family and all that knew and loved her. May you rest in peace while you watch us from Heaven.

Madeline Verdino

Madeline (Giordano) Verdino, 84, died on Saturday, May 26, in the Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.

Mrs. Verdino was born in Hoboken and lived in North Bergen for many years before moving to Kearny five years ago.

She is survived by her beloved husband Joseph; children Sandra Verdino and her husband Joseph Grygorcewicz, Joseph (Sandra LaFata), John and his wife Cathy and Steven and his wife Cheryl; one sister Clara Verdina; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
