Belleville

Belleville Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is offering help with information about benefits and services available for veterans. The DAV Mobile Service Office will be on location at the Disabled American Veterans, Belleville- Nutley Chapter #22, 612 Mills St., Belleville, on Oct. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to provide counseling and claim filing assistance free to all veterans and members of their families.

Bloomfield

The Bloomfield Recycling Committee and the Department of Public Works and Park Maintenance will host their first community shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the municipal parking lot located next to the post office. Residents may bring all their personal documents to be shredded and recycled at no cost. Green Sky Industries, a company committed to recycling in Bloomfield, will provide a shredding truck, driver, and laborers this event which will last for four hours or until the truck is full to capacity.

Bloomfield residents will be able to dispose of their files and documents safely at this time. The paper-shredding day is an opportunity for residents to reduce identity theft and to help support responsible paper recycling.

The Recycling Committee will be on site providing educational materials on recycling.

East Newark

West Hudson Brave Women Fighting Breast Cancer meets on the last Friday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East Newark Senior Center, 37 President St. The group will provide an atmosphere of warmth and comfort for patients and family. Harrison

Harrison Fire Department will flush hydrants throughout Harrison beginning the week of Oct. 1. Crews will work Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. to minimize customer inconvenience. The flushing program is expected to last for about four weeks.

Flushing removes harmless minerals that collect in the water mains, helping to maintain the integrity of the distribution system by keeping the water lines clean. It is also necessary for fire protection because flushing ensures that the hydrants are working properly.

During the flushing process, customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water. While the water is safe to drink, customers may prefer to wait until it runs clear before drinking or washing clothes or dishes.

The Arlington Woman’s Club meets at 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Arlington Players Club, 12 Washington Place, Kearny. Carol Jean Doyle will be the guest speaker, providing a Kearny update on Oct. 9.

In remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy in 1912, the Kearny Public Library will host a screening of “Titanic,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, on Friday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. downstairs at the main library, 318 Kearny Avenue. Literacy Volunteers-West Hudson, Inc. is seeking volunteers to train as tutors for its Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language programs. An orientation session will be held Wednesday, Oct.3, at 7 p.m. at the Kearny Branch Library, 759 Kearny Avenue. Training sessions will be held on the following Saturday mornings: Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27, and Nov. 3.

Following training, tutors will be matched with adults who wish to improve their reading/writing or conversational English skills. It is NOT necessary to know a foreign language. Tutors are asked to commit to two hours per week for one year.

The Lyndhurst Library is once again collecting winter/fall coats, clothing, and shoes – all sizes from adult to infant – to help the homeless of St. John’s Soup Kitchen. Please, no summer clothing, shoes, bedding or linens. The Soup Kitchen is not accepting these items at this time, and the library will have no place to store them. North Arlington Junior Vikings Flag Football League, sponsored by local businesses, invites the community to watch the teams play on Mondays, at 6 p.m. at Rip Collins Field on River Road.

The league currently has over 40 athletes, ages 4 to 6, playing. Each team has shirts that have the likes of NFL teams, such as the Cowboys, Redskins, Steelers and Dolphins printed on them just like the pros. The league’s goal is to teach the fundamentals of the game as well as establishing relationships that last a lifetime.

The league has a group of dedicated volunteers lead by head coach Tim Leiner. The assistant coaches are: Dan Gilmore and Joe Barrone of the Redskins, James Bunnell and Brian McGeehan of the Cowboys, Mike Stanzione and Joe Crawford of the Steelers and Mike Tetto and Sean Waddleton of the Dolphins.

The league also provides for a travel team that plays against other towns in the Meadowlands Football League on Saturdays to prepare athletes that have exhibited the ability to compete for the next level.

Nutley

Independent readers, ages 5 to 11, can improve their literacy skills by reading to a certified therapy dog. Registration is required. Due to space limitations, Nutley Library cardholders will receive priority registration. The program will be held in the Children’s Room, from 2 to 3 p.m., on the following Saturday afternoons: Oct. 6 , 13, 27 and Nov. 3 and 10. The Nutley Department of Parks & Recreation is accepting applications for the Recreation Wrestling Program for Nutley youngsters in grades 2 through 8. The fee for is $40 per child. Registration deadline is Oct. 19.

Wrestlers will compete with children from surrounding communities. The program will teach participants the fundamentals of the sport, proper techniques and good sportsmanship. Online registration is available at www.nutleynj.org or applications may be turned in to the Recreation Department, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The department is also offering Junior Kickers Soccer, open to Nutley toddlers ages three to five and directed by the Sports Factory professional coaching staff.

Junior Kickers is a noncompetitive program designed to help players begin to develop basic soccer skills by participating in soccer-oriented children’s games and basic physical education.

The hour-long Saturday sessions at Msgr. Owens Field will begin Oct. 6 and will run for four weeks from 2 to 3 p.m. one rain date.

The fee is $30 per child.

Registration forms may be turned into the Recreation Department, 44 Park Ave., no later than Oct. 1. Space is limited, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Online registration is also available online at www.NutleyNJ.org.
