Bloomfield

Friday Morning Knitting Club, an informal gathering of crafters, meets every week at Bloomfield Public Library at 11 a.m. Stop by the library any time after 11 a.m.

Student volunteers from Bloomfield College are offering computer tutoring at the library. One volunteer tutor is fluent in Creole, French and Spanish! A free SCORE seminar on the topic of What You Should Consider Before Starting a Business will be held at the library on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. SCORE volunteers provide free, confidential face-to-face and email business counseling to America’s entrepreneurs.

The library will host a fee seminar on financial education on Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m. Through the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”) Investor Education Foundation, Seton Hall’s Investor Advocacy Project is promoting informed investing and to provide pro bono (free) representation to victims of securities fraud. The program will include a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation, followed by a 15-minute question and answer session explanations of common financial concepts and review best practices for dealing with financial professionals.

A free seminar on Qualifying for Medicaid will be held at the library on Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. The seminar will be presented by Rhonda M. Benjamin, Esq. Benjamin, who has been practicing law since 1991, specializes in Medicaid, preservation of assets, guardianships, trusts and estates, elder law, divorce, real estate, and estate planning.

Harrison

Veteran’s Day services for the Town of Harrison will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. in the Veterans Plaza at the site of the war memorial. Taking part will be Harrison American Legion Post 282, VFW Post 340, Mayor McDonough and members of the Police and Fire departments.

Harrison Fire Commissioner Harold Stahl, a Vietnam veteran, will be the main speaker. Benediction and Prayer for Peace will be given by Rev. Joseph Girone of Holy Cross Church.

The Harrison Cancer League, in conjunction with the Harrison Board of Health, will be conducting breast screening and pap tests for any uninsured resident on Nov. 27 at the Board of Health office, 318 Harrison Ave., beginning at 5 p.m. For an appointment, call Maria Bradley at 862-763-0047. The Harrison Cancer League is conducting a toy drive for the Valerie Fund, which works with children and young people, infants to age 21, who have been diagnosed with Cancer and are undergoing treatment. Put a smile on the face of just one child by donating an unwrapped new gift for gift card. Gifts can be dropped off at the following locations, starting Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, Monday through Friday: Harrison Community Center, 401 Warren St., 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Harrison Board of Health, 318 Harrison Ave. Annex, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Harrison Senior Center, 221 Harrison Ave., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Harrison Cancer League is taking orders for its annual Thanksgiving pie sale. All orders must be received by Wednesday, Nov. 14. The sale features fresh-baked pies by Harvest House Brick Oven Bakery, with your choice of apple, cherry, blueberry, lemon meringue, three berry, peach, key lime, pumpkin and coconut custard. Kearny

The Kearny Elks Hoop Shoot will be held at the PBGC, 663 Kearny Ave., on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. All Kearny boys and girls from ages 8 to 13 are eligible to participate. Lyndhurst

The Humane Society of Bergen County 221-223 Stuyvesant Ave., has a supply of dog food, both canned, dry and treats available to anyone (FREE) who due to unemployment, disability or any other financial reasons cannot afford to feed their dog. The Woman’s Club of Lyndhurst is looking for new members, women age 18 or older, who are willing to volunteer their time to bettering their community. The club meets once a month on the second Wednesday of the month. The next meeting is Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Lyndhurst Community Center on Riverside Avenue.

The club presently volunteers at the local food b bank and works to raise funds to help the homeless. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend the next meeting. There is no obligation to join at that meeting.

The Food Pantry at the Lyndhurst Health Department will have new hours for the pantry beginning after Labor Day. The new hours are as follows: Monday through Thursday 1 to 3:30 p.m. The Food Pantry is available to Lyndhurst residents who can show proof of hardship and proof of residence.

Nutley

Enjoy a concert of traditional country, ragtime and bluegrass standards performed by Heavy Traffic at the Nutley Public Library on Saturday, Nov.17 at 2 p.m.

This locally based bluegrass quartet performs at music festivals and private events throughout the tristate area. Founding member Earl Karsen also hosts the weekly Bluegrass Express radio program on WFDU FM.

Their two recordings will be available for purchase.
