Two-alarm fire in Kearny under investigation

A two-alarm fire in a commercial/residential building at 403 Kearny Ave. forced the closing of the avenue from Liberty Street to Quincy Avenue last Wednesday morning. The blaze was knocked down quickly, however, and no injuries were reported.

Kearny Fire Chief Steve Dyl said the first alarm was received at 8:41 a.m., Nov. 7, and the fire was declared under control at 9:12 a.m. Dyl said the blaze apparently started in the basement of the building, which houses Zaris Fine Jewelry and several apartments above and behind the shop. Tenants were evacuated but were allowed to return after the flames were doused. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Dyl said. Crews from the Harrison and East Newark fire departments assisted the KFD.
