Highlights from Nutley Police blotter

Dec. 13

Police were notified about a possible scam by a resident who reported getting an email from someone familiar to the resident, with the writer pleading for money to help get a friend who was in trouble, out of the country, back home. After the resident complied, sending money via Western Union, a second email arrived asking for more money. The resident, suspecting a scam, then phoned police.

At 11:36 a.m. a Lakeside Drive resident reported the theft of a multi-colored bag containing bank documents for checking accounts from the resident’s unlocked vehicle. The owner canceled all accounts.

At 12:57 a.m. a Freeman Place resident reported an attempted burglary to their vehicle. Police said the resident told them they heard the vehicle’s antitheft alarm sounding, and, looking out the window, saw a dark-colored sedan speeding north on Freema. Police searched the area, to no avail.

Dec. 11

An angry motorist is believed to have damaged two vehicles while trying to get out of a tight parking space. At 9:40 p.m. police said a witness reported seeing a white man in his 40s with short hair, medium build, wearing a plaid shirt, who was boxed into his parking spot, kicking and elbowing both vehicles repeatedly. After getting the license plates of both vehicles, police contacted the owners about the incident.

Dec. 10

James Lios, 45, of Nutley, was arrested at 10 a.m. on a warrant in connection with an investigation of a prior theft. Bail was set at $20,000 with a 10% cash option. Police said Lios was also wanted by the Essex County Sheriff ’s Department and had three active warrants out of Irvington, Rahway and Belleville. He was held at the Essex County Jail pending court appearances.

At 1:42 p.m. police responded to a call about a motor vehicle crashing into the wall of a local business. A witness told police that the driver had passed out before the accident and that the motor was still running. Police shut off the engine and placed the vehicle in park. Nutley firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle and gave him oxygen. Police noted that inside a cup in the vehicle’s center console were drug paraphernalia including 30 wax folds (Eagle Brand), one package of Dead Man Walking bath salt, one rolled dollar bill with unknown white powder and one pack of e-z wider rolling papers. Police took the driver, Daniel Wallace, 26, of Wayne, to an area hospital where a blood sample was taken for drug testing. Wallace was issued summonses for possession of drug paraphernalia and bath salts, driving while intoxicated and operating with drugs in possession or in a motor vehicle.

At 9:14 a.m. an Emily Ave. resident told police that sometime between 10 a.m. and noon on Dec. 8, someone pulled out the Christmas lights on their front lawn, broke them and threw them in the street.

At 2:26 a.m. police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Jefferson St. where, according to police, the vehicle crossed over four residential lawns before smashing into a tree. Police said the driver had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. Kamillah Corbitt, 38, was issued summonses for driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to an alcotest, reckless driving and failure to wear a seat belt.

Dec. 8

James Perry, 43, of Delaware, was arrested on Florence St. at 9:42 a.m. on active warrants from Clifton and Weehawken totaling $196. After he posted bail, Perry was released pending court dates in those municipalities.
