St. Stephen’s Church in Kearny will celebrate its annual Father Washington Mass at noon on Sunday, Feb. 3. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the day the Four Chaplains gave their life vests to others on their torpedoed ship in the North Atlantic. A bronze monument honoring the Father Washington will be dedicated on the church grounds immediately following the Mass.

Take a glimpse into the life and times of Albert Einstein with the Meadowlands Environment Center’s Dr. Victoria Madden on Thursday, Jan. 24, from 2 to 3 p.m. This program is for all ages. Learn about the revolutionary physicist’s education, philosophy and family life. Although he is well-known for his contributions to science, Einstein also led a fascinating and at times mysterious, personal life. In addition to discussion, the group will examine a collection of Einstein memorabilia. Admission is $5; MEC members $4.

Nutley Public Library’s Pen to Prose Writers’ Group will meet on Monday, Jan. 28, at 6:30 p.m. The group was formed to read works-in-progress, share accomplishments, critique works, give writing instruction, and provide encouragement and inspiration to aspiring authors. The group is free and open to the public.
Daniel the Miracle Dog will be at the library on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. Come and meet Daniel, learn about his story and enjoy the short film “A Conversation with Daniel” by Nutley filmmaker Steven Crowley. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
The Nutley Department of Parks and Recreation is adding a Positive Fitness program to the list of regimens to whip residents into shape this winter. Positive Fitness workouts squeeze the most results out of the shortest amount of training time. Unlike steady aerobics and machine-based exercises that work muscles in isolation, Positive Fitness employs “total body training.”
This program, open to Nutley residents only, will begin Feb. 4 and run for a six-week session, two days a week. Classes will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Recreation Annex Building, 65 Bloomfield Ave. The instructor will be certified trainer Joseph Cimo.
Participants are to bring a mat, light weights and a water bottle.
The fee for this program is $60.
