Benito Fernandez

Benito Fernandez died on Jan 23. He was 58. Born in Aguino, Spain he lived the past 26 years in Harrison.

Arrangements were by the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. A funeral Mass was held in Holy Cross Church, Harrison, followed by entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Benito was a painter for Fine Painting in Mountainside and is survived by his wife Maria; his children Benito (Michele) and Maria Fernandez; his sister Maria Carmen Fernandez and his grandson Benny.

Margaret S. ‘Peggy’ Forrest

Margaret S. “Peggy” Forrest, (nee: McNulty), of East Hanover and formerly of Harrison, passed away on Jan. 24, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Newark, she lived in Harrison for many years before moving to East Hanover 16 years ago.

Margaret was a postal clerk at the Livingston Post Office for 20 plus years, retiring in 2009.

Predeceased by her husband Albert (2009), she is survived by her children Tammy L. Vasquez and her husband Armando, Tracy L. Granda and her husband “Mugsy,” Allison N. Dominguez and her husband Oscar, and Anthony Hess Sr., 12 grandchildren, her siblings; Michael Kipper, Sr. and his wife Sheila, Betty Gilmartin, sister-in-law Kathleen Donoghue and her husband Billy. She was also an aunt to many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted from the Mulligan Funeral home, 331 Cleveland Ave. Harrison, on Monday, Jan. 28. A funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church. Antonio Macedo

Private services were held for Antonio Macedo, who passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, Jan. 17 at the age of 95.

Husband of the late Anna Rodrigues, Antonio is survived by his daughters, Leonor Daltro and Matilda de Almeida, as well as his four grandchildren and great-grandchild Leanna.

Church services were held on Jan. 19 at Holy Cross Church, Harrison.

Antonio was born Oct. 3, 1917 in New Bedford, Mass. He lived in Portugal and Brazil before making his home in Harrison. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in the battles of Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa in Japan.

Antonio enjoyed traveling, hiking, nature and red wine. He is remembered by many Harrison residents for his long walks around town and West Hudson Park.

He will be greatly missed by friends and family.

Carmine Nigro

Carmine Nigro, a lifelong Kearny resident, died Jan. 23 at Care One in Morristown. He was 84.

Carmine served in The U.S. Army and was a member of The Marconi Club and The Dons 21 Executive Club. He is a retired superintendent of Public Works in Kearny. Carmine finally joined the love of his life, Angelina (nee Sanssalone) in heaven. He is survived by his daughters Catherine Ravert and Laurie (and Bob) Speer, his sisters Elizabeth Knight and Emily Callaghan. Also surviving are four grandchildren Paul, Nicole, Valerie and Robert along with several great-grandchildren.

Aloysius Pawlowicz

Aloysius Pawlowicz entered gently into rest on Jan. 23. He was only 4.

Arrangements were by the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. A funeral Mass was held in Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Aloysius is the beloved son of Christina Velez and stepson of John Simoes. He is also survived by his grandparents Angel and Angela Velez and Maria and Vitor Lourenco.

Virginia M. Reid

Virginia M. Reid, (Shinn) 95, died on Monday Jan. 21, in the Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla.

Arrangements were by the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Mrs. Reid graduated from the John Marshall College Law School in 1939. She was a volunteer for 35 years with the American Red Cross and maintained a field office on Kearny Avenue, which she was at every day in her Red Cross uniform. She also served as chairperson of the Essex County unit for five years before retiring from service.

Virginia was a member of the Forest Hill Field Club, Belleville, where she was an avid golfer and a member of the Arlington Woman’s Club, Kearny. She was a member of the Red Hatters in Florida for 25 years.

Born in Jersey City, she lived in Kearny for many years before moving to Florida over 30 years ago.

She and her late husband Edward T. Reid Sr. in 1942 founded the former Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals in Kearny.

“Ginny” is survived by her grandchildren Sandra, Edward T., III (Diana) and Robert T. Jr., and five greatgrandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Edward T., Sr. and her sons Robert T. and Edward T. Jr. “Skipper”

Pedro Torres

Pedro Torres, of Harrison, died on Jan. 25. He was 74.

Arrangements were by the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral Mass was held at St. Anthony Church. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pedro is survived by his wife Maria and his children Maria Montalvo, Carmen Nogueras and Freddy and Yolonda Torres. Also surviving are two brothers, one sister, 10 grand and five great-grandchildren.
