Ziggie Borkowski

Ziggie Borkowski “Bongo” died on Jan. 11. He was 87.

Born in Jersey City, he lived in Harrison for many years.

Visiting will be on Thursday, March 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 8, at 10 am in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Bongo served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was a longshoreman for 51 years, working mostly for Global Marine Terminal in Jersey City. He was a member of the ILA of NY and NJ.

Husband of the late Jennie (Kierszkowski), he is the father of Richard and Bill Borkowski and the brother of Chester, and the late Steven, Mary Lisa and Helen Sangiovanni.

Harry Robert Dittmyre

Harry Robert Dittmyre, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior Feb. 27.

Harry was born September 14, 1929 to Henry Dittmyre and Margaret Lorimer Dittmyre in Essex County. He was retired from the U.S. Dept. of Treasury where he worked for many years as a customs inspector. A strong pride in his Scottish heritage inspired him to learn to play the bagpipes, an activity he greatly enjoyed. Harry was also a life-long pilot and aviation enthusiast. After moving to North Carolina, he became an active member of Parkway Chapel.

In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by two sons, Robert and William Dittmyre; and two brothers, Douglas and Kenneth Dittmyre. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Betty McDowall Dittmyre; son, Bruce Dittmyre (Jilla); daughter, Laurie Bonilla (Carlos); grandchildren, Christine, John, and Lauren; as well as a sister, Selina Wait (George).

A funeral service was held on March 2 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with James Beatty officiating. A private, family graveside service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworthmiller.com.

Beatrice H. Dunphy

Mrs. Beatrice H. Dunphy (nee Hughart) died on Monday, Feb. 25. She was 91.

The funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny, followed by interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements were by the Condon Funeral Home, 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny (condonfuneralhome.com).

Mrs. Dunphy had owned, with her late husband, John, Dunphy’s Hawaiian Palms in Harrison for over 40 years. She had also served as a WAVE in the US Navy during World War II in the top secret decryption service in Dayton, Ohio.

Predeceased by her husband, John and son, Eugene, she is survived by her children John, Jr. (the late Joan), James (Ann), K. Dawn Reimer (the late Frank) and William Christopher Dunphy. Also surviving are her six grandchildren and her two great-grandchildren with a third on the way in March.

Elizabeth J. Garbowski

Elizabeth J. Garbowski died on February 12. She was 88.

Born in Harrison, she lived in Kearny before moving to North Arlington 25 years ago.

Mrs. Garbowski was an assembler for RCA in Harrison for many years.

She is wife of the late Edward M. and is survived by her daughters and their spouses Barbara and James McAloon, Dolores Jenkins and Robert Wisniewski and Donna and Michael Hewa. Also surviving are her brother John Blevis and her grandson Nicholas Hewa. She was predeceased by her grandsons Cody Allen Creech and Daniel Hewa.

Dorothy Kilcullen

Dorothy Kilcullen, 88, died on Feb. 26 at the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro.

She was born and raised in Angola, N.Y., and resided in Kearny most of her life. For the last eight years she was a resident of Franklin Park, Monmouth Junction and most recently, Brandywine Senior Living at Princeton. Dorothy retired after 20 years as a traffic staff supervisor with N.J. Bell Telephone Company of Newark. Dorothy had a great sense of humor and considered herself “feisty”. She loved her trips to Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe and was proud to have visited 48 states. Dorothy loved to cook, play poker, going on walks and in high school – twirling her baton.

She was predeceased by her husband Thomas H. Kilcullen, her son Gary, step-sons Jack, Tommy and Bobby. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Stan Sylvester, a son and daughter-in- law Walter and Susan Kilcullen, a sister Veronica Laskowski, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by the M.J. Murphy funeral home 616 Ridge Rd., Monmouth Junction. A funeral service was held in the funeral home.

Burial will be in the family plot in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny, at a later date.

Helen V. Mianecki

Helen V. Mianecki (nee Kozlowski), 93, passed away on Monday, Feb. 25, at Waterview Center Nursing Home in Cedar Grove, after a long battle with dementia.

For many years, Helen worked as a cashier at S. Klein. She is remembered for enjoying the company and moments spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very proud to have known four generations in her family.

Helen is predeceased by her loving husband, Alexander, and many brothers and sisters. She is survived by her companion and friend John Bouquet; her two daughters, Marcella Doonan and Regina Goham; her sister-in-law, Rose Kozlowski; her grandchildren, Lisa White, Linda & Timmy Eosso, Stephen and Victoria Goham, Debbie Doonan, Patty and John Forgsberg, and Barbara & Tony Caprara; her great grandchildren, Lucas, Brianna, Julie, Sarah, Kayla, Jake, Sophia, Alexa and Tyler; and her nieces and nephews.

Helen’s funeral services were under the direction of the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Harrison.
