John Burke Jr.

John “Jack” Burke Jr. 67, of Hazleton, Pa., formally of Kearny, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28. Born in Newark, he was the son of the late John and Theresa (Placonis) Burke. Jack was on the KHS football team and graduated in 1964. He served in Vietnam in 1967 with the U.S. ARMY 9th Infantry. Soon after, he started work with the U.S. Postal Service in Kearny and some years later transferred to Hazleton, Pa., where he retired 35 years later.

Jack had lung cancer and died from complications of chemotherapy.

Preceding him in death was his son John Burke III.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Joanne ( Pari) Burke and three children, his sons, Anthony and his wife Fallen, Jayme and his wife Danielle, and his daughter, Michele Burke. Also surviving are his brother, Dennis and his wife Nina, Rebecca (Becky) Northrup and her husband Kenneth. Jack also leaves behind 8 grandchildren to whom he was very close, and many nieces and nephews.

Services were beautifully held at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Hazleton, Pa.

Jeanne Caldwell

Jeanne Caldwell (Lambertson, 58, died on March 4 at the Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack.

Arrangements were by the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. A celebration of life was held with private cremation. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.thiele-reid.com

Jeanne was born in Kearny and was a lifelong resident.

She earned her R.N. in 1976 from Christ Hospital in Jersey City and was employed by the New Jersey State Department of Health in Trenton for 24 years before retiring in December 2011.

She is survived by her husband John and their sons Jesse A. Caldwell and his wife Stephanie, Ryan H. Caldwell and his fiancé Emily; and one sister Andrea “Cookie” Lambertson.

Christina Margaret Keating

Christina Margaret Keating (nee McQuilkin), 74, of Melbourne, Australia, passed away Feb. 15.

She was the beloved wife of the late John Keating; devoted mother of William Charles, Patricia and Kathleen; daughter of the late Dora and James McQuilkin; dear sister of David, James and Allan Mc- Quilkin, Kathleen Mulrenan, Nancy Loughlin, Dorothea Sneddon, Lily Parkin, Mary Crawford, Isabella Elliott and the late Patrick McQuilkin and Joan Hemphill and grandmother of seven.

A funeral mass was held Feb. 22 at Viewbank, Melbourne, Australia.

Bridget Anne Lynman Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, 91

Bridget Anne Lynam (nee O’Carroll), 91, joined Our Father in Heaven on Tuesday, March 5, while living at Arden Courts in West Orange. A viewing took place on Thursday, March 7, at the Biondi Funeral Home of Nutley, 540 Franklin Ave. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, March 8 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 28 Brookline Avenue, Nutley, where she was a member of the Rosary Society, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington.

Born in Manchester, England in 1921, Bridget was raised in Dublin, Ireland. Married to Thomas Lynam in 1947, the couple moved to New Jersey in 1958 with their six children, and settled in Kearny, where they welcomed two more children. Bridget retired from Bamberger’s (now Macy’s) after working as a salesperson for many years and moved to Nutley with her husband in 1991. She loved line dancing, Irish music, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling.

Bridget was preceded in death by her loving husband Thomas (1991); brother John and sister May; granddaughter Laura Lynam (2004); and grandson Benjamin Goldfogle (2009). She is survived by her eight children and their spouses, Carol and Jack Ayres; Irene and Kim Fernandes; Catherine and Kevin Brennan; Terence Lynam; Anne and Andrew Goddard; Marie and Jerry Glass; Clare and Thomas Goldfogle; and Jean and Dan Boyle; her grandchildren and their spouses, Brian and Sharon Ayres; Karen and Andrew Smith; David Fernandes; Kristen and Mark O’Grady; Elizabeth and Justin Mosher; Nicholas Brennan; Sean Lynam; Thomas Steagall Lynam; Colin Goddard; Emma Goddard; Christopher Glass; Anna Goldfogle; Sarah Boyle; Jessica Boyle; Emily Boyle; Sophie Boyle; her great-grandchildren, Timothy Ayres; George Smith; Molly O’Grady and Charlotte Mosher; and several nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the staff at Arden Courts, an assisted living facility for Alzheimer’s patients, for their loving care and support for their mother. Bernard McCarthy

Bernard McCarthy, of Kearny, died on March 6 at home. He was 85.

Arrangements were by the Armitage and Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, March 12, at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia’s Church, Kearny, followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. To leave an online, condolence please visit www.armitagewiggins.com.

Mr. McCarthy served in the Navy and was a member of The St. Cecilia’s Knights of Columbus.

Husband of the late Marie (McGarril), he is survived by his children and their spouses Brian McCarthy, John and Jeanette McCarthy and Karenanne and John Weins. Brother of Lorraine Starr he is also survived by his grandchildren Mary Catherine, Meghan, John, Brian and Jamie.

Anthony Mollica

Anthony Mollica died on March 3 in St. Barnabas Medical Center. He was 80.

Born in Jersey City, he lived in Kearny before moving to Harrison many years ago.

Mr. Mollica is survived by his children Rosemarie McMullen and Anthony Mollica. He was the brother of Mary Cinardo, Richard, Thomas and Frank Mollica and Josephine McCann he is also survived by three grand and six great-grandchildren.

Lena Velona

Lena (nee Albini) Velona, 80, of Edison, passed away Friday, March 8, at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Born in Leno Brescia, Italy, she was one of 11 siblings. Mrs. Velona resided in Kearny from 1971- 1986 before moving to Edison. She was a parishioner of St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen.

She is predeceased by her husband Vincent (d. 1999).

Surviving are her children Frank Velona (Diane) , Jerry Velona (Jean) , Joseph Velona (Linda), Robert Velona(Danielle) and Antoinette Cruz (Tony); 17 grandchildren Nicholas, Jacqueline, Alexander, Megan, Joseph, Matthew, Michael, Amanda, Nicole, Robert, Gabriella, Giuliana, Cristina, Lena, Jessica, Johnny, Julia ; one great grandson Liam and many nieces and nephews in Italy.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday, March 13, at 9:45 a.m. at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (Rt. 27) Metuchen (costello-runyon.com) followed by a 10:15 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Entombment is in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation is Tuesday, March 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Flowers may be sent, or donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, Tenn. 38105 (stjude.org).
