Bloomfield Public Library Book Club will meet on Monday, May 6, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. in the conference room to discuss “The Stone Diaries” by Carol Shields. “The Stone Diaries” tells the story of Daisy Goodwill Plett. Born in Canada in 1905, she lived an apparently ordinary life, until she died, nearly a century later, in a Florida nursing home. Carol Shields’ deceptively simple book won the Canadian Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction in 1993, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1994, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1995. It was also short-listed for the 1993 Man Booker Prize.

Harrison

On Wednesday, April 17, at 6 p.m., Harrison Public Schools will be offering an entertaining and informative presentation for all parents in the auditorium of Harrison High School. “In Real Life,” a dramatic play on the topic Internet bullying, will be performed by the George Street Playhouse Educational Touring Theater. “In Real life” explores the experiences of four friends as they encounter threatening text messages, exploited secret photos and anonymous online rumors, as the impact of cyber-bullying goes viral. A post-play discussion will provide practical strategies for parents to help their students make positive choices. Refreshments will be served, following the performance. Kearny

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2214 will sponsor a benefit concert for Richie Wray, who is suffering from spinal stenonis, on Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m. Three local bands will perform. A $10 donation is requested and will be collected at the door. Appetizers will be served.

A surprise presentation by several members of the Evening Membership Department of the Woman’s Club of Arlington will be on the agenda at their regular meeting on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Henrietta Benstead Center, Columbia Avenue, Kearny.

The library will present a special free program on the Jersey Devil on Wednesday, April 24, at 7 p.m., featuring a lecture by Brian Regal, PhD. and assistant professor of the History of Science at Kean University.

He has given lectures and presented papers at Columbia University, Princeton and the University of Oxford in England. More recently, his work has centered on cryptozoology and the study of monsters. His newest book is called “Searching for Sasquatch,” and he has published several articles on a range of interesting subjects, including sea serpents, werewolves and Bigfoot.

Thistle FC United U 15 girls will hold open tryouts for the 2013-2014 season on May 6 and 13, at 8 p.m., at Harvey Field, 280 Schuyler Ave., Kearny.

The team will be training in the fall and compete in high level tournaments. During the winter, the team will train and compete indoors and in the spring will play in an elite league and participate in high-level tournaments.

The West Hudson Arts and Theater Company (W.H.A.T.) will hold auditions for the hit musical “Godspell” on Sunday and Monday, April 28 and 29, starting at 7 p.m. at the W.H.A.T. Theater 131 Midland Ave., Kearny.

Performances will take place on June 14 and 15.

All actors will be required to perform a one-minute monologue and 32 bars of music from a modern Broadway-style show [no sides will be provided]. You may choose to sing from the show. Bring music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided.

The director is looking for all ages and races (18+) to create an extremely diverse cast.

W.H.A.T. will be producing the recent 2012 Broadway revival.

Participants will convert measurements to musical intervals and create and upload sounds on the computer using the Sound Cloud. The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission announces DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst is again open to the public on weekends from 8 a.m. to dusk.

The Meadowlands Environment Center (and its gift shop and restrooms) reopened as well.

The Transco Trail in De- Korte Park, from the NJMC administration building all the way to the western spur of the N.J. Turnpike, also reopened.

Note: Park visitors must not go beyond any orange fencing. Also, you must stay on the trail. The green mesh covering the berm next to the Transco Trail is protecting young plants, and it is very dangerous to walk on. See a park attendant if you have any questions.

The commission appreciates your patience while hurricane-related repairs are being made to other parts of the park and its trail system.

On Wednesday, April 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. Family Science Night: Astronomical Wonders for ages 6-12 will be held at the Environment Center. Registration for North Arlington’s summer recreation program for borough children is currently open to May 24. Registration will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Youth Center, 1 Legion Pl. (behind Borough Hall, next to the firehouse). Space in the program is limited.

As part of the annual Girl Scout Ambassador Community Service Project, gently used donations for Bergen County Children Services community group homes for youth in foster care will be collected on Sunday, April 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Queen of Peace Rectory garage, North Arlington. These children have suffered abuse among other trauma and receive intensive treatment services at these centers.

Your generosity would be greatly appreciated as the children entering the homes have very little if nothing of their own belongings.

Nutley Departments of Public Affairs and Health will dedicate the Nutley Health Department Health Clinic in honor of Nurse Angelica (Vitillo) Costa, a Nutley resident who served as the deputy director, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, from 1966 to 1970.

Costa served in the military during the end of WWII through the Vietnam War. She is a 2007 Nutley Hall of Fame recipient. Nurse Costa passed away on August 12, 2002.

The dedication ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, but due to bad weather, the ceremony was rescheduled for Thursday, April 25, at 5 p.m. at the Department of Public Affairs. Nurse Costa’s family will be in attendance. The public is invited.
