Nutley police blotter: Resident reports suspected fraud

May 24

A resident reported a suspected fraud to police, saying that someone had obtained their bank account information and made 47 transactions totaling $2,181 without their authorization. The bank has canceled their account.

May 22

An Albany Ave. resident called police at 3:51 a.m. to report an attempted burglary. The resident told police someone had apparently kicked the garage door, damaging its bottom section, but failed to get inside.

While on patrol, at 11:29 a.m., police said officers spotted someone in Municipal Lot 1 believed to have an outstanding warrant. After confirming that suspicion, police arrested Jhad Meadows, 22, of Bloomfield, on active warrants from Belleville, Newark and Parsippany. After Meadows was unable to post bail, he was turned over to Newark P.D.

At 1:46 a.m., police received a report of a 2004 Nissan Sentra stolen from St. Mary’s Place. Police said the driver was in the process of parking several of their vehicles for the night and, after having parked the first car, went back to get the second car but it was gone. Detectives are investigating.

May 21

While on patrol, at 5:40 p.m., police said they spotted a man suspected of having an outstanding warrant. After confirming that was the case, police arrested Jeffrey Jacobs, 22, of Kearny, He was released pending a court appearance.

At 2:40 p.m., police received a report that an electrical wire had fallen on a resident’s vehicle, scuffing the passenger side, while it was parked on High St.

May 20

A fraud victim told police someone had opened a credit card account in their name, without their consent, and charged more than $1,000 for a computer, fuel and attempted withdrawals at various ATM machines. The bank has terminated the card and is investigating.

At 12:05 p.m., police responded to a Glendale St. location on a call about someone climbing in the window of a house. Upon arrival, police observed that the door to the house in the front of the property was padlocked and all its windows closed but at the house in the rear, a man inside opened the door and admitted the officers. Inside, police said, they detected an odor of suspected burnt marijuana and two burnt “roaches.” Police arrested the occupant, Waynell Newton, 26, of Nutley, on charges of burglary and possession of drugs. Police said Newton also had an outstanding warrant from Belleville. He was released after posting bail pending a court date.

May 18

Two homeowners on different blocks reported their properties being vandalized within six minutes of the other. At 10:13 p.m., a Bayard St. resident told police they heard three loud bangs on their front door and, going outside, found their home had been hit with eggs. The vandals then drove away. After getting a description of the vehicle, police searched the area to no avail. At 10:19 p.m., a Mapes Ave. resident reported that someone had done a drive-by egg throwing at their house. Police drove around the area to search for the vehicle but were unsuccessful.

At 3:38 a.m., police stopped a vehicle on Kingsland St. and arrested the driver, Gina Hudes, 42, of New Milford, on charges of DWI and speeding. She was released pending a court appearance.
