Bloomfield

Bloomfield Public Library, 90 Broad St., will continue its genealogy/class workshop this summer, moving to the second Wednesday of the month, beginning in July, from 4 to 6 p.m. Registration is not required. Learn how to research your family tree.

This program is led by community volunteer Miguel Ramos, a certified teacher of social studies and American history.

The library is now offering a chess club for adults on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., beginning on July 10. Participants are encouraged to bring a board and pieces. The children’s chess club meets on Mondays at 3 p.m. in the children’s library.

Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center, 240 Bellville Ave., is offering an art camp for children ages 5 to 13. Session 1 (July 8-12) and Session 2 (July 15-19): The Well-rounded Artist: Campers will work in a variety of media. $250. Materials included. Session 3 (July 22-26) Adventures in Cooking: Campers will learn a different culinary treat each day. $275. Materials included. Session 4 (July 29-Aug. 2) Creative Crafts: Jewelry-making, macramé, printing, woodworking and more. $250. Materials included. Session 5 (Aug. 5 to 9) Adventures in Cooking: Classes are held Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Register early – class size is limited. All students must bring lunch, mid-morning snack and water. Wear clothes that can get dirty from art supplies.

Oakeside will run a bus trip to Caesar’s Casino in Atlantic City on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The bus will leave Oakeside at 9 a.m. and leave at 5 p.m. Participants will enjoy a bagel and juice on the bus and receive $25 in slot play at the casino. The cost is $30 per person.

Oakeside will sponsor a trip to Broadway to see the Tony award winner for Best Musical, “Kinky Boots,” on Thursday, Oct. 10. Participants will enjoy a buffet dinner at the Oakeside Mansion at 4:30 p.m., then board a bus to the theater. The cost of the trip is $156 per person and includes dinner, round-trip bus transportation, mezzanine seats, and all taxes and tips.

Oakeside will conduct a bus trip to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, a 35-acre sculpture garden with more than 270 sculptures on Sunday, Oct. 13. Participants can take a self-guided tour or join a docent-led tour at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. Lunch is available at several venues on site, or participants can pack a picnic lunch. After the sculpture garden, the bus will stop at a nearby Cracker Barrel restaurant and gift shop. The bus will leave Cracker Barrel about 6:30 p.m. The cost is $55 per person, which includes the bus and admission to Grounds for Sculpture, but does not include meals.

A Chinese brush painting exhibit by the Hsin-Ruey Art Group of New Jersey Chinese Cultural and Art Association will be on display at Oakeside from July 2 to 30, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. An opening reception to meet the artists will be held on July 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information call Oakeside.

Bloomfield’s local access TV station (Ch. 35 Comcast; Ch. 30 Verizon) will present “Panic in the Streets” and “Suddenly” on June 29 as part of its June Double Feature Month. A combination of classic cartoons, action-packed serials, and vintage movies are screened every Saturday at 8 p.m.

East Newark

West Hudson Brave Women Fighting Breast Cancer meets on the last Friday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. at the East Newark Senior Center, 37 President St. The group will provide an atmosphere of warmth and comfort for patients and family. Harrison

Harrison East Newark Elks #2326 will have a 4th of July Tar Beach party on July 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be draft beer, wine, soda and food. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $10 for children.

The Harrison Public School District will be participating in the 2013 Summer Food Service Program from July 8 to Aug. 8 (Monday to Thursday only from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.)

The Summer Food Service is sponsored by the federal Food And Nutrition Services, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. This program provides all children age 18 and under with the same free meal in accordance with a menu approved by the state agency regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age.

Harrison American Legion, 8 Patterson St., will host an old fashioned family picnic on Saturday, June 29, starting at 3 p.m. to celebrate Independence Day. Kearny

Kearny Public Library, 318 Kearny Ave., invites children ages 5 and older to an art class on Wednesday, June 26, from 4 to 5 p.m.

The library will provide the art materials. Registration is not necessary, but space is limited.

Join the library for showings of “Oz the Great and Powerful” (PG) on Thursday, June 27, and “Jack the Giant Slayer on Friday, June 28 (PG-13). Both films start at 2 p.m. downstairs at the Main Library. Popcorn and light refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome, but please note the rating for each film.

A free Digital Photography Class will meet at the Main Library on Wednesday, June 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. No sign-ups are necessary.

Local professional photographer and computer expert Bryan Louvado will show a short presentation of his work and outline the basics of digital photography and getting to know your camera.

Presbyterian Boys-Girls Club, 663 Kearny Ave., will be open during July and August on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. Most members and guests are between the ages of 8 and 15.

The summer program offers basketball, dodgeball, wiffleball, kick ball, gymnastics, bowling, bumper pool, air hockey, foozball, arts and crafts, ping pong and electronic games.

Summer trips have been scheduled to State Fair (July 30), KC Royals vs. Yankees at Yankee Stadium (July 10), Mountain Creek Water Park (July 17), Seaside Heights rides and water park (July 31), Bow Craft Amusement and Miniature Golf (Aug. 7) and the Jersey Jackals vs. Newark Bears in baseball (Aug. 14).

All trips are chaperoned by PBGC directors. The club will be supervised this summer by a professional staff including Tom Fraser, former Lincoln School guidance counselor, Paul Vieira, Mark and Tonia Latka and Ryan Fraser.

Lyndhurst

The Food Pantry, located at the Lyndhurst Municipal Annex, 253 Stuyvesant Ave., has new hours: Tuesday through Thursday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The Food Pantry is available to Lyndhurst residents who can show proof of hardship and residency.

The Meadowlands Environment Center, 2 DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst, is hosting a free program for seniors, “The Boys of Bergen: Remembering the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Bergen County,” on Thursday, June 27, at 2 p.m.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the CCC during the Great Depression. While providing jobs for many young unmarried men, the program dealt with the conservation and development of natural resources. Between 1933 and 1941, the CCC boys toiled along the cliffs of the Palisades and in the marshes of the Hackensack Valley. Presenter Kathleen Duxbury is an author, photographer and New Deal researcher.

St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 624 Page Ave. is participating in the Fortnight for Freedom, 14 days of prayer and fasting for religious liberty ending on July 4. The U.S. bishops have called for the Fortnight for Freedom to address the current challenges to religious liberty.

On June 27, there will be prayers coinciding with the all-day Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Prayer times will be at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., with Benediction at 7:30 p.m.

The Fortnight for Freedom events conclude Masses at 7 and 9 a.m.

The Lyndhurst Library Children’s Room, 355 Valley Brook Ave, invites children in grades pre-k to 2 for a walk-in story and coloring time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. No registration is required.

Children in grades pre-k to 6 are welcome at the library every Monday and some Wednesdays (July 6, 24 and 31) from 3 to 4 p.m. to make an origami animal zoo. Registration is required.

Children of all ages are invited to the library for a showing of Disney’s classic “The Lion King” on Tuesday, July 2, from 2:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is required. Popcorn will be served.

Eliot the super magic man will be at the library with jokes, magic tricks and more magical entertainment on Wednesday, July 10 at 4 p.m. The show will also include Super Bunny and Super Bird. Children ages 3 -10 are welcome. Registration is required, so please call in advance.

The library will host “Outrage Hisss…Pet,” an animal show, on Wednesday, July 17, from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Children in grades pre-k to 6 are invited to learn some cool facts about animals. Registration is required.

Science meets art in a hands-on special event at the library on July 25 at 4:30 p.m. for children ages 7 to 14. Students will get an up close and personal look at different fossils from around the world. Kids will get a chance to play an archaeologist as they create fossil rubbings, dig through sand to uncover “dinosaur bones” and even create a fossil impression out of clay. Registration is required.

Children in grades 3 to 6 can learn to play checkers at the library on Tuesday, July 9 and Thursday, July 11, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on both dates. Registration is required and please call in advance. A checkers tournament will be held at the library in three rounds (children must be committed to all three rounds) on the following dates, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.: First round – July 16; Semifinal round – July 18; Final practice – July 23; and the final round will be held on July 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. The checkers champion will be given their prize on Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required.

North Arlington

A food drive will be conducted, as part of T.J. Churuti’s Eagle Scout project, on June 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Foodtown, 1 Schuyler Ave., North Arlington and Stop and Shop, 425 Lewandowski St., Lyndhurst. Non-perishable items are welcome, along with cash donations and store gift cards. All items will be donated to Queen of Peace Food Pantry.

Children who complete the reading portion of the Summer Reading Club will receive special recognition at a ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m.

Queen of Peace High School, 191 Rutherford Pl., North Arlington, announces that Head Football Coach Robert Kearns will offer a free football camp for all boys entering grades 5 to 8, July 22 to 24, 9 a.m. to noon, at the school’s football field. The camp will center on fundamentals, rules, weight room instruction, in and out of season training, nutrition and game preparation.

The school’s football staff and Athletic Director Ed Abromaitis will run the camp which will be held at the Queen of Peace High School football field.

All campers should wear a T-shirt, shorts and sneakers. Water and Gatorade will be supplied.

Nutley

Nutley Public Library, 93 Booth Dr., will host “Dinosaur Dig” on Friday, June 28, at 11 a.m. as part of its summer reading kickoff (appropriate for grades K to 6 but all are welcome.) No registration is required. This event will feature original music, songs, show and tell with rare fossils, a touch of magic, a puppet and the “Dinosaur Game Show.”
