The Belleville Irish American Association is sponsoring a trip to Wildwood/Smithville/ Ocean City/Atlantic City/ Cape May from Sept. 8 to 12. Belleville Historical Society will hold its annual Independence Day ceremony July 4 at 10 a.m. in the cemetery at Belleville Dutch Reformed Church, Main and Rutgers Sts. The historic cemetery is the final resting place of 66 soldiers of the American Revolution, one of the largest group of 1776 veterans in the United States. The 40-minute ceremony will include a roll call of the troops, raising the colors, the National Anthem, and a 21-gun salute.

Bloomfield

Bloomfield Public Library, 90 Broad St., will continue its genealogy/class workshop this summer, moving to the second Wednesday of the month, from 4 to 6 p.m. Registration is not required. Community volunteer Miguel Ramos, a certified teacher of social studies and American history, will explain how to research your family tree.

The library’s book club, “Finance for Beginners,” will continue throughout the summer with a workshop series on Tuesdays at the library and Thursdays at Panera Bread in Montclair at 5:30 p.m. both nights. Using the book “Financial Intelligence. . . Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean,” the workshop will cover the basics of the income (budget) statement, the balance sheet (net worth) and cash flow statement and their impact on daily financial decisions and selection of investment securities.

New Jersey Audubon presents a birding hike in Essex County Branch Brook Park, Mill St., on Saturday, July 20, at 8:30 a.m. Walk some of the paths of this varied park scene that holds a surprising variety of birdlife, from forest birds to ducks and herons. Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center, 240 Belleville Ave., will run a bus trip to Caesar’s Casino in Atlantic City on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The bus will leave Oakeside at 9 a.m. and depart at 5 p.m. Participants will enjoy a bagel and juice on the bus and receive $25 in slot play at the casino. The cost is $30 per person. Oakeside will sponsor a trip to Broadway to see the Tony award winner for Best Musical, “Kinky Boots,” on Thursday, Oct. 10. Participants will enjoy a buffet dinner at the Oakeside Mansion starting at 4:30 p.m., then board a bus directly to the theater. The cost of the trip is $156 per person and includes dinner, round-trip bus transportation, mezzanine seats, and all taxes and tips.

Oakeside will organize a bus trip to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, a 35-acre sculpture garden with over 270 sculptures on Sunday, Oct. 13. Participants can take a selfguided tour or join a docentled tour at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. Lunch is available at several venues on site, or participants can pack a picnic lunch. After the sculpture garden, the bus will stop at a nearby Cracker Barrel restaurant and gift shop and will leave at about 6:30 p.m. The cost is $55 per person, which includes the bus and admission to Grounds for Sculpture but not meals.

Reservations are required for all events and must be paid within five days of booking. There are no refunds on paid reservations.

A Chinese brush painting exhibit by the Hsin-Ruey Art Group of the N.J. The Harrison Public School District will participate in the 2013 Summer Food Service Program from July 8 to Aug. 8 (Monday to Thursday only from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.).

The Summer Food Service program, sponsored by the USDA’s Food And Nutrition Services, provides all children up to age 18 with the same free meal in accordance with a menu approved by the state agency regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age.

Harrison East Newark Elks Lodge #2326 will hold a 4th of July Tar Beach party on July 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be draft beer, wine, soda and food. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $10 for children.

Kearny

The Meadowlands Environment Center (MEC) is hosting two one-hour pontoon boat trips for seniors Tuesday, July 9 (rain date July 16) at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. at River Barge Park, 260 Outwater Lane, Carlstadt. MEC staff will discuss the natural and cultural history of the region and point out fauna and flora. On land (while you wait – or when you return), MEC Director Angela Cristini will discuss the ecology of the Hackensack River. Bring a camera and wear sneakers.

Science meets art in a hands-on special event at the library on July 25 at 4:30 p.m. for children ages 7 to 14. Students will get an up-close and personal look at different fossils from around the world. Kids will play archaeologist as they create fossil rubbings, dig through sand to uncover “dinosaur bones” and even create a fossil impression out of clay. Registration is required.

Children in grades 3 to 6 can learn checkers at the library on Tuesday, July 9 and Thursday, July 11, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on both dates. Registration is required. A checkers tournament will be held at the library in three rounds (children must be committed to all three rounds) on the following dates, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.: first round – July 16; semifinal round – July 18; final practice – July 23; and final round –July 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required.

North Arlington

Queen of Peace High School, 191 Rutherford Place, announces head football coach Robert Kearns will offer a free football camp for all boys entering grades 5 to 8 July 22-24, 9 a.m. to noon, at the school’s football field. The camp will center on fundamentals, rules, weight room instruction, in and out of season training, nutrition and game preparation. Campers should wear T-shirt, shorts and sneakers. Nutley

Applications for the 2013 Senior Farms Market Nutrition program vouchers are now available at Nutley Department of Public Affairs, 149 Chestnut St.

As per the Essex County Division of Senior Services, all Nutley residents ages 60 and older, and income eligible, are now required to pre-register to receive vouchers for the 2013 season. Vouchers will be distributed on Friday, July 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Essex County Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Welcome Center where the county will host a Farmer’s Market kickoff event. Transportation to the event will be provided on an as-needed basis. Applicants need valid ID, as well as proof of income. (Income eligibility: annual income of $21,257 or less, or $1,772 monthly or less, for a single applicant). Residents can pre-register for the program during office hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Approved residents will receive four $5 coupons, which can be redeemed for fresh fruit and vegetables only, at any farmers market in the state, from July through November.
