NEWARK –

Two young people from the region were killed in a motor vehicle accident on Rt. 21 recently, authorities reported.

The victims were identified by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Police Department as Andrew Negrin, 21, of Harrison, and Amanda M. Velez, 23, of Belleville.

According to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, a single car crash happened at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at McCarter Highway (Rt. 21) and Miller St.

“Arriving officers discovered that a … 2009 Mazda had crashed into a utility pole at that location,” a joint release from the prosecutor’s office said. “Both occupants of the car, the driver and the front seat passenger, were pronounced dead a short time later.”

The driver was identified as Negrin, a U.S. Navy veteran, and the passenger was listed as Velez, the release said.

“The cause of the crash remains under investigation,” said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit.
