Jane Theresa Capuano

Jane Theresa Capuano (nee Nowakowski) passed away on Dec. 16 at the age of 65. Born in Newark, she lived in Kearny for the last 30 years. Jane completed her undergraduate education at Rutgers University in Newark and went on to complete her graduate education at both Rutgers University and Kean College. S

he was a reference librarian at the Newark Public Library, starting in 1972. She was also employed at the Montclair Library and St. Cecilia’s School in Kearny.

Jane is survived by her beloved husband Jim and cherished daughter Amy, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edmund H. Costa

Edmund H. Costa, 85, of Little Egg Harbor, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, at Arcadia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Little Egg Harbor.

He was born in Fall River, Mass., residing there, Newark, and Kearny, prior to moving to Little Egg Harbor.

Ed previously worked as a sanitation inspector for Kearny. He was a member of Knights of Columbus of St. Cecilia, Kearny, and St. Theresa’s R.C. Church, Little Egg Harbor. Ed was predeceased by his wife Emma. He is survived by his sons Edmund Costa and wife Margaret, Little Egg Harbor, Glenn Costa and wife Anita, Kearny, and David Costa, daughter Debbie Junner, Little Egg Harbor, grandchildren, Edmund Costa III and wife Katie, Jessica Klein and husband Jason, Mellisa Junner, Christopher Costa and wife Jen, and Glenn Costa, great-grandchildren, Anthony, Angelo, and Jason.

Visitation was at Wood Funeral Home, 134 E. Main St., Tuckerton. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Theresa’s Church, 450 Radio Rd., Little Egg Harbor, followed by burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Jude Cancer Research.

Helen Cecilia Jankowski

Mrs. Helen Cecilia Jankowski, 92, of Smyrna, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18. A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 21, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Smyrna with Father Andrews Kollannoor officiating. Services in New Jersey will be announced at a later date.

Thomas F. McShane Sr.

Thomas F. McShane Sr., of Kearny, died Dec. 18 at the Alairis Health Care Center in Kearny. He was 86.

Mr. McShane was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a retired letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service in Kearny. He was a past president of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a member of the Ancient Order Hibernians and Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his children and their spouses Thomas F. McShane and Ann, Mary McShane-Hagman and Tom, Brian McShane and Imelda and Patricia McShane- Pettigrew and Michael, along with his grandchildren Erin, Thomas, Kristina, Samantha, Michael, Brian, Joseph and Anthony. He was predeceased by his daughter Margie and his siblings Alice Sauer and Lawrence McShane.

Antoinette ‘Ann’ Monacelli

Antoinette “Ann” Monacelli (nee Sansone) died Dec. 16 at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center.

Ann was born in Kearny and resided there for 75 years before moving, to be closer to her son and grandson, to Middlesex. She retired from Guyon Pipe Company in 1993 where she worked as a sales representative. Years ago she enjoyed her membership at The Marconi Club.

Ann is survived by her son Mark and grandson Christopher. She was predeceased by her brothers Anthony, Joseph and Daniel Sansone.

Hazel Norberg

Miss Hazel Norberg, 97, passed on Dec. 13.

Arrangements were by the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Dr., Kearny. Cremation was private. A memorial service will be held in the First Lutheran Church, Kearny, at a later date.

Hazel was born in Kearny and was a lifelong resident. She was a friend to so many in her neighborhood and loved by all who knew her.

Miss Norberg was an R.N. at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny, for 40 years where she also served as head of Central Supply before retiring in 1982.

She was the longest active member at the First Lutheran Church.

Although she never married or had children of her own, she was beloved by her nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. She passed the same way she lived her life, on her own terms and left behind a legacy of love and service to others.

Gerardo ‘Jerry’ Riposta

Gerardo “Jerry” Riposta died Dec. 17 at home. He was 87.

Born in Jersey City, he was a lifelong Kearny resident.

Jerry served in the U.S. Navy. He was a county superintendent of the Hudson County Parks Department; prior to that he was with the Hudson County Police and the Park Police. Altogether he was a dedicated employee of the county for 55 years.

He is survived by his beloved wife Nora (nee Marley) his son Anthony Riposta and his daughter Barbara Pearson, along with her husband Jim. Brother of Frank and Salvatore Riposta, he is also survived by his grandchildren Dr. James M. Pearson, Kristopher G. Pearson, Arielle Riposta and Amberly Riposta and his great grandchildren Haley Ann and Brady James.

Alexander Robertson

Alexander Robertson died on Dec. 17 at home. He was 66.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he lived many years in Kearny.

Alexander was a retired Kearny firefighter. He was a member of Copestone Ophir Lodge and The Scots Club in Kearny. He was a proud 19- year member of AA.

Husband of the late Louise, he is survived by his son Andrew and his wife Eilin and his daughter Heather. Also surviving is his brother Douglas and his wife Debbie and his grandchildren Isabella, Anthony, Ryan and Ruby.

Donald Ross

Donald Ross, 68, of Youngstown, Ohio, formerly of Greenwich Township, passed away Friday, Dec. 6, at home.

Born June 30, 1945, in Harrison, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret (Mc- Donald) Ross.

His wife, Gail, passed away Aug. 18, 2011. He was employed by Verona Water Treatment Plant before his retirement three years ago. He served in the Navy for 20 years on multiple ships including the USS America, USS Guadalcanal, USS Lindenwald and the USS John Paul Jones before he retired as a Chief Petty Officer.

He is survived by three sons, Kenneth Shaffer and wife, Teresa, Carl Childs and James Childs; three brothers, Bob, Tom and wife, Sue and Jay and wife, Dabney; three sisters, Barbara Wagner and husband, Bob, Peggy McLynden and husband, Charlie and Cathy Turney; and eight grandchildren. A brother, Barney, passed away earlier.

Funeral services were held previously under the direction of the Doyle-Devlin Funeral Home, Inc. in Phillipsburg. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, Ohio 44512.

Marian G. Weiss

Marian G. Weiss (nee Bauer) died Dec. 16 at Alaris at West Hudson. She was 91.

Born in Newark, she lived in Kearny before moving to Beachwood 27 years ago.

Marian was a supervisor at Fireman’s Fund in Parsippany. Wife of the late Willard J., she is survived by her children Geraldine E. Husth, Dolores Woupes, Willard G. (Donna) Weiss, and Peter R. (Patricia) Weiss. Sister of the late Evelyn Bauer, she is also survived by 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
