Subwoofer stolen from Nutley resident’s home, police say

July 5

Someone swiped a Kicker Subwoofer Speaker valued at $700 from a Passaic Ave. residence, the occupant told police. The theft was logged at 1:10 a.m.

A William St. resident told police that after loaning their charge card to someone, they noticed that two transactions they didn’t authorize had been made on their card and that they’d been unable to reach the card’s borrower. Police said they couldn’t contact the borrower, either. The card has been canceled.

At 7:49 p.m., a Parallel St. resident reported someone had stolen their engagement ring from their home. The ring was valued at $2,000. Police said they found no sign of forced entry to the residence.

July 6

At 7:27 p.m., an attendant at a Franklin Ave. gas station reported a theft. The attendant told police that while they were dealing with a customer, a man described as white, wearing a white T-shirt, shorts and baseball cap walked into the station’s shop, took more than $150 in cash from the counter and walked east on William St. When the attendant yelled at the man to stop, he began running. Police canvassed the area but couldn’t locate the man.

July 8

At 2:48 p.m., while on patrol, police spotted a man on Clover St. who matched the description of an individual wanted by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department. Police arrested Edwin Velez, 28, of Nutley, and turned him over to that department. Velez was also wanted on an outstanding warrant from Newark, according to police.

During a wind storm, between 10 and 11 p.m., police responded to hazardous conditions at locations on Centre St., Harrison St. and S. Spring Garden Ave. where tree branches had fallen. The fallen tree limbs damaged four parked cars on Centre, caused minor damage to a house on Harrison and damaged a house and vehicle on S. Spring Garden, police said.

July 10

At 12:55 p.m., police were notified that someone described as a Latino man, wearing a black backpack and white hat, had stolen baby formula from a Harrison St. store and fled south on Franklin  Ave. Police responded and located a man matching the description on Franklin Ave. Searching the suspect, police said they found two 12.5 gram containers of Enfamil powder, heroin in a bottle with a cellophane-wrapped top and two insulin needles commonly used to inject heroin. Pedro Rivera, 34, of Newark, was arrested on charges of possession of drugs, possession of a hypodermic needle and shoplifting. He was released pending a court date.

At 6:30 p.m., police said they stopped a bicyclist, identified as Luis Rivera, 42, of Newark, who was reportedly riding dangerously along so as to nearly cause several accidents. Police said Rivera had a prescription bottle containing 64 phendimetrazine pills not prescribed to him, along with a small green plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine, and a “cooker” inside the sole of his right sneaker. Rivera was charged with two counts of possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also issued a summons charging him with failure to keep right while operating a bicycle. He was released pending a court appearance. – Ron Leir
