A third hotel is coming to Harrison.
Following the Hampton Inn on Passaic Ave. and the Element Harrison-Newark on Somerset St. comes the AC Hotel by Marriott in the Riverbend District in the town’s waterfront redevelopment area.
Advance Realty, one of the principal players in the redevelopment area, last week announced plans to build the 85,000 square foot, 150-room hotel.
It will include a bar and lounge and breakfast area, both including outdoor seating, a meeting room, fitness center and lobby, along with more than 4,300 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
The hotel will supplement the development of a 35- acre mixed-use project that Advance plans to assemble in a joint venture with partner DeBartolo Development that will feature 1,000 luxury apartments and 20,000 square feet of retail on three blocks adjoining the Red Bull Arena.
“The addition of AC Hotels by Marriott to the Riverbend District will be a key component in the continued development and enhancement of a dynamic destination in Harrison,” said Peter Cocoziello, president of Advance Realty.
Panasonic Corp. of North America has moved into a new technology center that Advance developed in the Riverbend District. This building houses Panasonic’s engineering offices, a lab and testing space.
AC Hotels is one of 19 brands in the Marriott International global portfolio and currently there are more than 75 AC Hotels spread through Spain, Italy, Portugal and France. Its first American facility was built in New Orleans last November. More than 50 additional such hotels are expected to open during the next three years in the U.S. and Latin America.
Harrison’s 250-acre waterfront redevelopment area represents 32% of the town’s 1.2 square miles. The town’s master plan calls for the transformation of the area over the next decade.
