Harrison 

Harrison-East Newark Elks, 408 Harrison Ave., sponsor a charity motorcycle run for veterans on Aug. 16. Check in at the Elks is at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $20. Contact the Elks at 973-485-9478. Return to the Elks after the run for a buffet, pig roast, barbecue and live music. Proceeds benefit the East Orange Veterans Hospital.

Neighborhoods throughout the town are invited to the 32nd Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event Aug. 4, 6 to 9 p.m. Residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Representatives from the Police Department and Harrison/East Newark Elks will be at Roosevelt Park to meet citizens and discuss crime prevention and drug prevention/education topics. There will be games and giveaways for children. Music and food will be available.

Kearny 

Lady Kards Softball Skills Camp runs Monday, Aug. 3, to Thursday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to noon each day. The camp, open to all females ages 7 to 14, is designed to develop skills, fundamentals and team play and is directed by Kearny High School varsity staff and players. VFW Post 1302, 300 Belgrove Drive, hosts its inaugural 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fun Run/Walk (in memory of SSG Jorge Oliveira) Saturday, Aug. 1. Early entrants receive a shirt, so pre-register at Runsignup.com for $20 per person. The charge is $25 per person on the day of the race (no shirt). Registration on day of race begins at 9 a.m. The One-Mile Fun Run/Walk starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk at 10 a.m. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in three age categories. Refreshments will be available after the race. This is a USATF-certified course.

The Lyndhurst Health Department is collecting new, non-drawstring backpacks and new/gently used school uniforms for the upcoming school year. Donations can be dropped off at the Health Department, 601 Riverside Ave., Suite 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Donations are welcome through Sept. 11. Those with children in need of school supplies are invited to contact the Health Department at 201-804-2500 to schedule a pick-up of the needed supplies.
