Mammograms available for those eligible

East Newark Mayor Joseph R. Smith and the Borough Council have approved a resolution recognizing October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Smith noted that every year the borough promotes breast cancer awareness and remembrance for people and families affected by the disease. In addition, the mayor is encouraging eligible residents to take advantage of a program offered by the Metropolitan Health Center for free or lowcost mammograms to women who are uninsured or underinsured for medical coverage. On Friday, Oct. 30, there will be an informational table in front of Borough Hall, 34 Sherman Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Women can submit their names and information for evaluation for a mammogram. This event is sponsored in conjunction with the Brave Women Breast Cancer Support Group. Eligible residents may also visit the East Newark Human Services Department on Mondays and Wednesdays, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., to fill out an application for the services.
