Belleville Elks Lodge 1123, 254 Washington Ave., in conjunction with Lyndhurst Elks Lodge 1505, hosts a pasta dinner Friday, Feb. 5, 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is $12. The Belleville and Lyndhurst Elks join together to raise funds to help send special needs children to New Jersey Elks Camp for Special Needs Children.

The Kearny Public Library, 318 Kearny Ave., announces the following programs:

  • Saturday Family Film Matinees continue Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. with a free screening of “Hotel Transylvania 2” (PG / 89 mins.) Donuts and light refreshments will be served.
  • A lunchtime jazz concert takes place in the main library children’s room Saturday, Jan. 23, at noon. Admission is free.

Kearny Health Department, 645 Kearny Ave., invites pet owners to renew dog and cat licenses Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by mail. Proof of a rabies shot, valid for the entire licensing year, is required.

License fees are as follows: Non-neutered/non-spayed animal license fees are $21 or $18 for animals that are neutered/ spayed (with proof). An additional $25 late free will be assessed for licenses renewed after March 31.

The department will conduct a free rabies clinic Saturday, Jan. 23, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Kearny Water Department garage, 570 Elm St. Previouslylicensed pet owners will receive a rabies vaccination certificate by mail that owners must fill out and bring to the clinic with their pets.

It may be cold outside but Kearny Community Garden is encouraging town residents to start thinking green.

The group will sign up town residents for this year’s growing season Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to noon; and Tuesday, Feb. 9, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Kearny Public Library, 318 Kearny Ave. Cash or check payments are due at the time of registration.

Membership costs $25 per plot per family. T-shirts may be purchased for $15 each. Returning members from 2015 are encouraged to pay Peg Bixler by Jan. 23 to reserve a spot for this year.

American Legion Post 139 Rehabilitation Committee holds a ward party for veterans at Chestnut Hill Extended Care Facility, Passaic, Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 2:30 p.m.

The party is sponsored by the Harry Brechtbill family in memory of WWII veteran John Girgenti, father of Beverly Brechtbill.

Kingsland-Lyndhurst AARP Chapter 4866 sponsors a bus trip to St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Fla., April 24-30. Lyndhurst High School is currently seeking candidates for its May 3 academic awards dinner.

Each year the dinner honors a Lyndhurst High School alum who has demonstrated scholastic excellence in high school, higher education, career endeavors and community service. The committee has established a pool of qualified candidates. Each year, names are added to the pool.

To be eligible, candidates must have graduated from LHS at least 10 years ago and cannot have been employed in the Lyndhurst School District for at least three years.

Queen of Peace Knights of Columbus Council 3428 hosts its annual Shrove Tuesday Dinner Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the Columbian Club Hall,194 River Road. The night before Ash Wednesday also known as Mardi Gras, Pancake Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, and Shrove Tuesday, is the time when Christians prepare to mark the beginning of Lent. Dinner will consist of traditional pancakes and other fine foods (beer, wines, and soda included). The event includes a presentation on the history and traditions of this day. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12 (no cost for kids under 6).
