Literacy New Jersey West Hudson Programs, 759 Kearny Ave., seeks volunteers to be trained as tutors for its Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language programs. Tutors are then matched with adult students who need help with their reading, writing or English speaking skills. There is a suggested fee of $45 for materials for the workshop. Classes will start on Tuesday evening, Feb. 16, for five consecutive weeks.

Lyndhurst Health Department partners with Clara Maass Medical Center to bring the WAVE (Wellness Assessment Van for Elders) van to the Carucci Senior Building, 281 Stuyvesant Ave., on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Health care experts from Clara Maass provide annual wellness visits in the van for Medicare-eligible seniors. These visits are designed to help prevent future illness and injury by conducting personalized reviews of each senior’s health habits and simple screenings. The party is being held in memory of Thomas Coughlin and is sponsored by his daughters Maureen and Patricia and his grandson Christopher.

Coughlin was a U. S. Army and Navy veteran of World War II. In the Navy, he served on the battleship USS Massachusetts which fired the first and last Navy military cannon fire in the war.
