Belleville

AARP Chapter 2051 sponsors a trip to Newport, R.I., Monday, May 22, to Thursday, May 25. The trip includes three nights’ accommodations, three breakfasts, three dinners, a tour of two Newport mansions, a tour of the Mystic, Conn., area, a visit to Brick Market Place, a visit to the Newport Grand Casino and more. Harrison

The Town of Harrison, under the direction of Councilman Anselmo Millan, hosts a special program for residents, through the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation, on the LIHEAP program – or, Low-income home-energy assistance program Wednesday, April 19, at noon, at the Harrison Senior Center, 221 Harrison Ave.

Programs are available for homeowners and renters for help with heating bill, electric bills, natural gas, oil and other fuels and cooling bills.

The town also hosts Harrison Hometown Fair on Sunday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Library Park (next to the Post Office.) There will be music, face painting, arts & crafts, bounce houses and slides, plenty of food, a vendor market, a life-size train ride and more.

The Town of Harrison and Health Officer Vincent Rivelli will conduct a free rabies clinic Wednesday, April 26, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Cleveland Ave. firehouse.

This will be the only rabies clinic that the town will be offering this year.

Anyone whose dog is due for a vaccine in 2017 is advised to attend.

The Kearny High School Class of 2018 sponsors a Zumba party with KHS alum, podiatrist and certified Zumba instructor John Branwell on April 19, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the high school gym, 336 Devon St. The cost is $3. Kearny Public Library Director and local poet Josh Humphrey headlines a fundraiser and celebration of National Poetry Month for the Kearny Public Library and West Hudson Arts & Theater Company on Friday, April 21, at 7 p.m., at the WHAT Theater, 65 Oakwood Ave.

Humphrey presents selections from his recently published collection, “Afterlife,” a project he developed with his father Bill Humphrey, who provided photographs for each piece. The reading features a projection of all the images taken at spots throughout the world.

Tickets are $5, with proceeds benefitting both WHAT and the library. Light refreshments and a book signing conclude the program.

The Kearny Public Library hosts an adult cooking rice and grains workshop with instructor Lydia Quinones Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m., in the lower-level kitchen at the main library, 318 Kearny Ave.  This new series of demonstrations explores the healthy world of rice and grains. The first workshop will take on a veggie rice dish. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Tuesday April 25, at 2:30 p.m., a Veterans ward party takes place at Chestnut Hill Convalescent Home, Passaic. Games of chance will be conducted by American Legion Post 139’s rehabilitation committee – Lyndhurst members – to allow veteran residents a chance to win cash to buy treats. Bed ridden veterans will be visited and given treats and gifts as well. The party is sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Rutherford. Certified Zumba instructors Natalia and Mercedes Novoa offer Zumba classes for senior citizens at the Community Center, 255 Riverside Ave., for one hour, beginning at 1 p.m., every Monday for seven weeks, from May 8 to the end of June.  (No class on Memorial Day, May 29).  The cost for the seven-week program is $35. Zumba Gold is a stress-free form of exercise that not only keeps the body fit, but the mind and spirit as well. The Lyndhurst Health Department hosts a lunch-and-learn seminar, “Forget Me Not – An Alzheimer’s Discussion,” on Friday, May 5 at noon at the Carucci Senior Building, 281 Stuyvesant Ave. Join experts from Clara Maass Medical Center and Alzheimer’s New Jersey to celebrate National Mental Health Month.

This program provides a comprehensive overview about memory loss, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Information about risk factors and warning signs, steps to obtaining a diagnosis and treatment options will be discussed.  Planning for the future, coping with behavioral changes and accessing community resources will be reviewed. A hot lunch will be served. Call the Health Department at 201-804-2500 to register. This program is free and open to the public.

Knights of Columbus Council 2396 sponsors a fundraiser, “A Night with the Cameos,” a New Jersey oldies group, to benefit its scholarship fund, on Friday, April 28, at Sacred Heart School, 620 Valley Brook Ave. Tickets are $40 and include dinner, coffee/tea and soda and dessert (BYOB/no one younger than 21 admitted) and music. Lyndhurst Parks & Recreation sponsors a trip to the Stony Hill Inn for a “Carnival in Venice” on Thursday, May 11. A bus will leave from the NJ Transit lot by ShopRite at 10:30 a.m. and return by 3:30 p.m.

The $45 ticket includes a luncheon consisting of focaccia bread, salad, pasta, chicken parmesan, sausage and peppers, mixed vegetables, potatoes, two complimentary drinks, dessert, coffee, tea and soda, transportation and entertainment.  Tips are not included, however.  Suggested tip is $1 per person.

The Tri-County Camera Club of Nutley holds its remaining April meetings at Nutley High School in the teachers’ cafeteria at 8 p.m. The schedule is as follows:

  • April 18 — Participate in the Competition in Nature (cannot show human hand) and print images, with judging by club members. Only club members are eligible.
  • April 25 — Club member Bob Laura shows how to use layers in Photoshop to combine images or to modify parts of an image, and then combine the results to produce an outstanding image.
