Chemical plant to build office bldg., warehouse

KEARNY –

A South Kearny industry will be widening its operations now that the Kearny Planning Board has green-lighted its plans.

The board voted last Wednesday, May 3, to grant Veckridge Chemical site plan approval and variances permitting the company to put up a two-story, 38-foot-tall office building and a single-level, 30-foot-high, 26,000-square foot warehouse, across the street from its Central Ave. facility.

The company, which has operated at that location since the 1960s, will be filling in the development site to raise it above the flood zone and then compressing the soil before building.

Board members went along with the applicant’s request to deviate from required land use standards governing minimum front and side yard setbacks and lot width.

Veckridge will be using the new site as a distribution center for its products which include food additives, flavors, perfumes and the like.

Bob Veca, a company vice president, and local attorney Gary Bennett spoke for the applicant at the board hearing.

There were no objectors.

In an unrelated infrastructure matter, the Kearny Zoning Board of Adjustment has tentatively scheduled a special meeting for May 31 at 7:30 p.m. to consider an application by PSE&G Fossil LLC for site plan approval and variances that would allow the utility to upgrade its power transmission facility at 200 Pennsylvania Ave.
