Elizabeth (Betty) M. Rodgers

Miss Elizabeth (Betty) M. Rodgers, a long time North Arlington resident, died on Friday, May 12, in Bloomfield.

She was 87.

Relatives and friends were received at the Condon Funeral Home, 684 Kearny Ave., Kearny, on Friday, May 19. The funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington, on Friday, May 19. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Betty had been a registered nurse in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny, for 28 years until her retirement.  She received her R.N. from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Paterson in 1951.

She was predeceased by her loving cousin, Patricia Gray. Patricia’s husband, Chubby Gray, survives.

Betty was the cherished godmother of Patricia Ann Hayes.

Also surviving are many cousins.

In lieu of flowers, Mass cards would be appreciated.

Eugene Doherty

Eugene C. Doherty, of Kearny, died May 16.

He was 80.

Visiting was at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Church, Kearny. Cremation will be private.

Born in Belfast, Ireland, Eugene settled in Kearny 56 years ago.

He was a painter with Hudson Shotz, New York, for 55 years before his retirement.  He was a member of the Irish-American Association, Kearny.

He was the beloved father of Ann Polukord (Frank), Gerald Doherty and his girlfriend Yanira Echavarria, Pauline Doherty and her fiancé Richie Perez and the late Eugene Doherty Jr. The father-in-law of Joanne Turro Doherty, he was also grandfather of Gary, Robyn, Ryan, Kevin, Jill, Christopher, Shannen, Samantha, Luke, Anthony, Holly and Christian.  He was also great-grandfather of Mason.

He is also survived by his brothers Joe, Paul, Christopher and Pearce and his sisters Eileen, Patricia and Sadie — all of Ireland.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated.

Deborah Scales

Deborah Scales died Friday, May 5, at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.

She was 53.

She was born in Newark and lived in Kearny for many years before moving to Harrison six years ago.

Miss Scales is survived by her sister, Catherine Scales and two brothers, Michael Scales and James Gizzo; her boyfriend, Bobby Wood; and her niece Emily Rose Gizzo.

Private arrangements were under the direction of Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, Kearny.

David Canales

David Canales, of Harrison, died at Hackensack Medical Center after a short illness on Sunday, May 21.

He was 70.

The funeral will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, on Thursday, May 25, at 9:15 a.m.  A funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, East Newark.  Viewing hours will be on Wednesday, May 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. His cremation will be private.   For directions or to send condolences to his family, visit www.mulliganfh.com.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru, he lived in Harrison for the last 30 years. David worked at Pechter’s Bakery in Harrison for many years. He served in the U.S. Army for four years during the Vietnam War.

David is survived by his beloved wife Mercedes “Ana” Canales, his loving children Jessica, Jefferson, Abigaill and Alex Canales, his caring mother Sara Vilchez, mother-in-law Micaela Tudela, and his dear grandchildren Alondra, David, Keanu, Angelina, Analhi, Ariana, Sebastian and Mia-Bella.

He is also survived by 10 siblings in Peru, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

William F. McGeehan

William F. McGeehan died Saturday, May 20, at his home in Mount Pleasant Township, Pa.

He was 71.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Wednesday, May 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. Cremation will be private.

Mr. McGeehan was born in Jersey City and lived in Kearny for many years before moving to Mount Pleasant Township, Pa., in 1993.

He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper from 1954 to 1956.

William was a fireman for the Kearny Fire Department’s Alarm Division. He began as a lineman in 1972 and was promoted to assistant superintendent before retiring as superintendent in 1993.

He was a member of Frobisher Post No. 99, American Legion in Kearny.

William is survived by his children, Wendy MacConchie (Wayne), William F. McGeehan and Keith F. McGeehan (Linda); siblings, Elaine Pearce and Paul McGeehan. He was the grandfather of Tyler McGeehan, Connor MacConchie, Erin Gilmore and Lief Marie McGeehan. He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis R. (nee Herbster) McGeehan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Mount Pleasant Emergency Services, 161 Great Bend Turnpike, Mount Pleasant, Pa., 18453.
