Arthur W. Miller

Arthur W. Miller, 86, died May 15, at the Hackensack University Medical Center.

Born in Kearny, he lived in Lyndhurst before moving to North Arlington in 1958. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U. S. Air Force. Since 1958, he had worked as a professional photographer and was the owner of the Art Roberts Photo Studio in North Arlington for over 58 years.

He was a member of the Professional Photographers Association of America, the Professional Photographers Association of New Jersey and the North Arlington Rotary Club — and he was one of the founding members of the North Arlington Soccer League.

Arthur also was the yearbook photographer for Lyndhurst and North Arlington high schools for many years.

While in high school, Arthur was a member of the 1949 Lyndhurst Bears state football champions.

He was the beloved husband of the late Dulce Maria (nee Alvarez), the cherished father of Sharon Granell and her husband Albert, and Jay J. Miller, all of North Arlington; the adored grandfather of Adam and Alexis Granell; and the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Helen F. Tate

Helen F. Tate, of Kearny, died May 21.

She was 89.

Visiting and a prayer service took place Friday, May 24 (?), at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. Cremation was private.

Helen was a member of St. Stephen’s Church, the Harmony and Friendship Clubs, AARP, Seniors Inc. and the Salvation Army Home League, all in Kearny.

The wife of the late Frank McCarthy and Curtis Tate, she is survived by her sons Edward McCarthy (Judith) and James McCarthy (Barbara). Sister of Catherine Lipinski, she is also survived by her grandchildren Justine, Jonathan and Lance.

David Charles Shinn

David Shinn, formerly of Kearny, died peacefully at home on May 15.

Born July 31, 1958, he was the seventh child of Doris and Harold Shinn. David, who worked as a sales and marketing executive for VanRan Communications, of Norcross, Ga., lived in Jonesboro, Ga., since 1990.

David was a man of many gifts. He was an athlete, a skillful mechanic and carpenter, a prodigious salesman and a charismatic leader. His contagious warmth and energy combined with his amazing ability on guitar and vocals made him the heart and soul of any gathering. He endured physical and emotional challenges that would have defeated most of us, but just when you thought he wouldn’t make it, up he rose time and time again.

David will be deeply missed by his children, David, Jennifer and Danielle; his grandchildren Bryson, Mason, Cameron and Lily; his mother Doris; his siblings Barbara Swerkes, Peggy Naumann, Jerry, Janet, Lorrie Ostroman, and John and Betty Wells and their spouses; 16 nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and neighbors.

A celebration of his life will take place in July, with details forthcoming. Donations in David’s memory may be sent to Clayton House, P.O. Box 1304, Jonesboro, Ga. 30236.

William F. McGeehan

William F. McGeehan, 81, died Saturday, May 20, at his home in Mount Pleasant Township, Pa.

His wake was at the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Wednesday, May 24. Cremation was private.

Mr. McGeehan was born in Jersey City, and lived in Kearny for many years before moving to Mount Pleasant Township, Pa., in 1993.

He served in U.S. Army as a paratrooper from 1954 until 1956.

William was a fireman for the Kearny Fire Department in the Fire Alarm Division. He began as a lineman in 1972 and then was promoted to Assistant Superintendent before retiring as Superintendent in 1993.

He was a member of Frobisher Post No. 99, American Legion and FMBA Local 18, both in Kearny.

William is survived by his children, Wendy MacConchie (Wayne), William F. McGeehan and Keith R. McGeehan (Linda); and siblings, Elaine Pearce and Paul McGeehan. He was the grandfather of Tyler McGeehan, Connor MacConchie, Erin Gilmore and Lief Marie McGeehan. He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis R. (nee Herbster) McGeehan.
