Bloomfield

Bloomfield Public Library Book Club will meet on Monday, Nov. 5, at 6:45 p.m. to discuss “The Driver’s Seat” by Muriel Spark. A strange, isolated woman takes a holiday from her job in an accounting firm to travel to Italy, ostensibly to meet someone, for a more sinister reason. Sparks is the acclaimed author of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brody,” “Memento Mori,” and many others. The Bloomfield Public Library, as part of the BCCLS Library system, will transition to a new library automation system for the circulation and cataloging of library materials on Dec. 12. The new system, Polaris, will provide greater functionality than the current system.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 15, library patrons will no longer be able to place holds on any items in the system. Placing of holds will resume after the new system goes live on Dec. 12.

Harrison

Harrison American legion will hold two events in October to raise additional funds for their holiday projects for the needy. On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Post will have its annual Oktoberfest, featuring a dinner of old world German food. The New Jersey Department of the Treasury will have representatives checking for unclaimed funds for Harrison senior citizens on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 10 a.m. at the Harrison Senior Center. Refreshments will be served.

Kearny

Kearny High School Culinary Club will host its first annual beefsteak fundraising dinner on Friday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Scots American Athletic Club, 40 Patterson St. To reserve tickets, call 201- 772-9928. Reserved tables of eight available. All proceeds directly support the Kearny High School Culinary Club.

KHS Project Graduation will be meeting on Oct, 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room behind the Stage @ KHS. All parents of KHS students are welcome to attend. At the main library, 318 Kearny Ave., Preschool Play/ Story Times will continue on Tuesday mornings from 11 a.m. – noon, and also on Thursday mornings from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Baby Steps play/ story time for children under 3-years-old will continue on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 – 11:15.

At the branch library, 759 Kearny Ave., Preschool Play/ Story Times will continue on Thursday mornings from 10:15 – 11 a.m.

Children ages 5 and older are invited to attend a Halloween art class with Mrs. Mills from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 18. The library will provide the art supplies for making something special. Space is limited, and will be first come first served, at 318 Kearny Ave.

The library’s first bead necklace workshop will take place from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 24. This free workshop is targeted to persons ages 10 and older. Each participant will learn to string beads in a pattern, and also to attach a clasp. Wear your new necklace home, or save it for a gift to someone special. The library will provide the materials. Space is limited, so tickets will be given out beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the day of the workshop.

West Hudson Family Success Center, 655 Kearny Ave., announces the following free programs:

A Prosperity Workshop is set for Thursday, Oct. 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Center will be taking applications for N.J. Family Care on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Cancer Awareness workshop will also be held on Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lyndhurst Library Children’s Room hosts Walk-In Story Time for Pre-K to grade 2 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Storytime for age 3 will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 4 and 11 at the library and for ages 3 to 4 on Oct. 18 and 25, at 1 p.m.

On Oct. 29, the library will host Drawing Ghouls and Ghosts from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. A Halloween parade for children in Pre-K to fifth grade will be held at the library on Oct. 31 at 3:30 p.m.

Meadowlands Environment Center, 2 DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst, will host “Fantastic Fish,” for children age 3 and 4, on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. Explore the life of a fish from fry to adult with the help of Dr. Seuss. Meet the fish that are common in the center’s salt mar and learn how they live. The program includes stories and a take-home craft. North Arlington

North Arlington Elks, 129 Ridge Rd., will have a fish fry on Friday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Price is $12 per dinner. Each fish and chip dinner includes fish fried or broiled, a bowl of clam chowder, baked clam and cole slaw. Shrimp cocktail and clams on the halfshell will also be available for an additional price.

The North Arlington Woman’s Club third annual pasta dinner and raffle will be held on Friday, Nov. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the North Arlington Senior Center (behind library and Borough Hall). Dinner price is $10 for adults and $5 for children age 10 and under. Raffle tickets are sold separately. Vendors are wanted for the North Arlington Woman’s Club annual holiday bazaar on Wednesday, Nov. 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus, 194 River Road. Nutley Department of and Recreation is hosting a free benefits seminar on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 44 Park Ave., room 300, at 12:30 p.m. Transportation will be available. All Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to attend. Learn about the 2013 Medicare updates and to overview the different Medicare plan designs including Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D for Prescription Drugs. There will also be a review of additional prescription assistance that may be available to some beneficiaries at the State level through PAAD and Senior Gold.

The Friends of Nutley Public Library will have a book sale on Oct. 18 to 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stock-up on hardcover books, paperbacks, CDs and DVDs. Proceeds benefit library programs and collections.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m., celebrate Rocktober at the library with an acoustic set of popular light rock classics by “The Kootz,” a North Jersey-based group. Enjoy hits from the 50’s through the 70’s from artists such as The Everly Brothers, Otis Redding, The Beatles, and more.

The library will host BabyGarten, for infants and toddlers, from birth to 22 months and their caregivers on Monday, Oct. 22 and 29, at 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. The program includes great books, nursery rhymes, playtime. Meet other babies from the Nutley area. Registration is required.

P.J. Story time will be held at the library on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. No registration is required.

Story Time to be held on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Wear your costume, go trick or treating at the service desks, hear some Halloween stories, make an awesome craft and decorate your own cupcakes. “American Presidents Then and Now,” presented by Dr. John Perry Leavell, will be held at the library on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. The discussion will be on the presidency and its role in American society. Perry will examine the connection between crises and “great” presidents; war and the presidency; political parties and the presidency; and public expectations and the presidency. This event is free and open to the public.

Nutley Parks and Recreation Department announces that CPR and AED training will be available. Two classes are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, in Room 201 in the Recreation Department, 44 Park Ave.: from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The fee is $65 per student. Class size is limited.
