Mayor Alberto Santos congratulates newly promoted Kearny Police Sgt. Michael Ryan (l.) and Kearny Fire Capt. John DeGiovanni.

At a recent meeting of the Town Council, a ceremony was held to mark the promotions of two members of the Kearny Fire Department and Police Department. Firefighter John DeGiovanni was promoted to captain, and Police Officer Michael Ryan was promoted to sergeant.

Capt. DeGiovanni scored a 96.210 on the N.J. Civil Service Captain’s Exam, which ranked him not only No. 1 in Kearny, but No. 2 in the entire state, over more than 2,000 applicants who took the exam.

DeGiovanni, who grew up in Kearny, joined the KFD in February 1999. He and his wife, Anmarie, have three daughters, Kaetana, Paige and Johnna.

Sgt. Ryan also grew up in Kearny and had one of the highest scores on his statewide promotion test. He joined the KPD in September 2003, having formerly been a member of the Harrison PD and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan and his wife, Maureen, are the parents of two sons, Michael and Liam.
