Michael P. Cicchino

Michael P. Cicchino died at home June 16, 2020.

He was 75.

Originally from Harrison, Mike lived many years in Kearny.

Private arrangements were by the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny. There will be a memorial service for him in the future. It has not yet scheduled.

Everyone who knew Mike understood how much this guy loved life. That became evident in 1963 when he was voted Best Dancer in Harrison High School. He loved music and played the sax. He served in the Army 1964-1966. He was past president of the Moose Club in Harrison. He was a member of the Elks and the American Legion.

In 1974, he established his trucking company, QDS Messenger Service. He coached Kearny recreation girls’ softball. He was currently operating his real estate business, M5, in Kearny.

In 1970, he married Mariann (Barbossa) and they had three children — Marla Manfredi (Andrew), Marisa Friedman (Josh) and Michael Cicchino (Anna). Brother of Angela Varano (Charlie) and Albert Cicchino, he is also survived by his grandchildren Max, Gemma, Gavin, Alexa, Connor, Daniel and Dasha along with his in-laws Charles Barbossa (Eileen), Ronald Barbossa (Barbara) and their families.

Karen Garner O’Neill

Karen Garner O’Neill, 62, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died peacefully at home on June 15, 2020.

Born June 12, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri, Karen grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, before moving to Charlotte. She graduated from Myers Park High School and then spent much of her life in Kearny, before ultimately returning to Charlotte.

Karen was always industrious, working as a property manager, waitress, crossing guard, and she spent most of her career managing the call center operations for the transplant team at the New Jersey Sharing Network.

She loved the beach, a good book, Trivial Pursuit and a game of Scrabble.  She was cool, tough and fiercely loving and loyal to her family and friends, whom she cherished.

Karen was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Bischoff, and her father, John Garner. She is survived by her devoted fiancé and companion, Mike Andreas; her daughter, Michelle Curnow; son, John O’Neill (Mary Mitchell); daughter, Catherine Gamache (Reed); her siblings, Valerie Rose (Steve), Pamela Walker (Jamie), and Therese Garner (Charles Pettigrew); her step-mother, Laurie Garner; her grandchildren, Tyler, Delaney, Jack and Rory as well as loving members of the O’Neill family and other dear family and friends.

A small, private service will take place at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home in Charlotte. A celebration of Karen’s life will also take place at a later date in New Jersey with details to follow.

Delmar Alves Cancela

Delmar Alves Cancela, 73, of Kearny died June 15, 2020.

A graveside service took place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

Born in Portugal, Delmar moved to Newark in 1972 before settling in Kearny in 1982. A master carpenter who could build anything, Delmar worked for Union Local 142, and was well known for his fine woodwork.

Delmar was the beloved husband of Maria (nee Batista) Cancela; loving father of Angela Cancela, Sandra Villanueva, Paolo Cancela, Delmar Cancela and Eva Cancela; and cherished grandfather of Adriana Villanueva.

Carol J. Boni

Carol J. Boni, 88, of Kearny died June 14, 2020.

Relatives and friends were invited to attend a visitation for Carol at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, Kearny, last week. A funeral service was celebrated at the Christian Apostolic Church in Kearny. Interment was in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny.

Born in Kearny, Carol was a lifelong resident. She was a longtime devoted member of the Kearny Christian Apostolic Church.

Carol was the beloved wife of the late Robert Boni; loving mother of Robert Boni and his wife Linda and Mary Lynn Girgan and her husband Tim; dear grandmother of Bobby and his wife Silvia, Jason and Kyle and his wife Chelsea. She was also the loving sister of Sarah D’Argenio and Emanuel Marotti.

Julio DaSilva     

Julio DaSilva, 70, died Friday, June 19, 2020, at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark.

He was born in Newark where he resided until settling in Harrison at the age of 16.

Julio was the owner of Masters Auto Body in Harrison for many years.

Beloved husband of Maria Lidia Cirne DaSilva; devoted and loving father of Rosemary Belo and her husband Alfredo Manuel, Lisa Maria DaSilva and her husband Joao Carlos, David Manuel DaSilva; brother of Antonio Da Silva and his wife Deborah and Manuel DaSilva and his wife Patricia; dear grandfather of Ashley Marie and Anthony Julio Belo and Isabel Victoria Veloso.

Because of restrictions placed on occupancy in public spaces by the State of New Jersey in the ongoing efforts to limits the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Julio’s funeral arrangements are limited private.

Francis X. Hesketh

 

Francis X. Hesketh, 82, of Kearny, died June 16 at his home in the company of his loving family.

Prior to his retirement in 1996, Mr. Hesketh was employed as a special education teacher in the Montclair school system for 25 years, having received his master’s degree in special education from Jersey City State College.  He was a member of the New Jersey Education Assn., and the Essex County Teacher’s Assn. In 2010, he was honored by St. Cecilia Parish’s Holy Name Society as their “Man of the Year.”

Frank’s commitment to his family, his Catholic faith and St. Cecilia Church was beyond measure. Frank was a member of the Parish Council, taught high school CCD and called Bingo every Friday night in the school auditorium for many years. He also participated in any volunteer effort when needed. Frank’s impact on us all is genuine and long-lasting.

No child could have hoped for a better father. He drove to every cheerleading competition and attended every play, concert and sports event that involved his children. As a teacher, Frank had a profound impact on his students, evidenced in the many letters he received and cherished over the years. Frank was passionate about history, art, literature and music.

He shared his interests with his family included many trips to concerts, museums and plays in Manhattan.   Annual vacations in LBI or the Catskill Mountains were the highlight of the year for Frank and his family.

He was the most patient, loving and gentle father.

Frank and Carol married at the age of 20 and had four children by the age of 27. Without fail, Frank put his family first, working two jobs for the better part of his life, all while being a great dad and active in his community.

Life was not always easy for Frank, having lost both of his sons, Michael and Frankie. With faith, and grace, Frank rose above his losses, allowing treasured memories to outweigh his sorrow.  Frank’s home was quiet, calm and filled with laughter and love, always.

Frank is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Carol Hesketh (nee Baillie,) his cherished children, Maureen Dean (Joseph), Theresa Halligan (John); his five grandchildren, Bridget and Kathleen Dean, Benjamin and Jack Halligan and Darcy Hesketh; and his brother, Jack Hesketh. He was predeceased by his beloved sons, Michael and Francis Jr.; and his brother Patrick.

The funeral from the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, Kearny, will be private.

Maria M. Esteves

Maria M. Esteves of Harrison died at Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville, on Wednesday, June 17, 2020.

She was 78.

Private funeral services will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave. Harrison. She will be buried in her family plot in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny.

Born in Sangalhos, Portugal, Maria emigrated from Portugal to the United States in 1969 and she lived in the Ironbound Section of Newark, before settling in Harrison in 1977.

Predeceased by her husband Francisco (2000), Maria is survived by her children, Joe and his children Michael, Brian, Katie Julie and Vicente, Mario and his wife AnneMarie, and their son, Nicholas, Great grandchild Julian and her brother, Fernando DaSilva. Maria was predeceased by her brother Antonio.
