Bloomfield Public Library Book Club will meet on Monday, May 6, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. in the conference room to discuss “The Stone Diaries” by Carol Shields. “The Stone Diaries” tells the story of Daisy Goodwill Plett. Born in Canada in 1905, she lived an apparently ordinary life, until she died, nearly a century later, in a Florida nursing home. Carol Shields’ deceptively simple book won the Canadian Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction in 1993, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1994, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1995. It was also short-listed for the 1993 Man Booker Prize.
On Wednesday, April 17, at 6 p.m., Harrison Public Schools will be offering an entertaining and informative presentation for all parents in the auditorium of Harrison High School. “In Real Life,” a dramatic play on the topic Internet bullying, will be performed by the George Street Playhouse Educational Touring Theater. “In Real life” explores the experiences of four friends as they encounter threatening text messages, exploited secret photos and anonymous online rumors, as the impact of cyber-bullying goes viral. The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission announces DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst is again open to the public on weekends from 8 a.m. to dusk.
The Meadowlands Environment Center (and its gift shop and restrooms) reopened as well.
The Transco Trail in De- Korte Park, from the NJMC administration building all the way to the western spur of the N.J. Turnpike, also reopened.
Note: Park visitors must not go beyond any orange fencing. Also, you must stay on the trail. The green mesh covering the berm next to the Transco Trail is protecting young plants, and it is very dangerous to walk on. See a park attendant if you have any questions.
The commission appreciates your patience while hurricane-related repairs are being made to other parts of the park and its trail system.

As part of the annual Girl Scout Ambassador Community Service Project, gently used donations for Bergen County Children Services community group homes for youth in foster care will be collected on Sunday, April 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Queen of Peace Rectory garage, North Arlington. These children have suffered abuse among other trauma and receive intensive treatment services at these centers.
Your generosity would be greatly appreciated as the children entering the homes have very little if nothing of their own belongings.

Nutley Departments of Public Affairs and Health will dedicate the Nutley Health Department Health Clinic in honor of Nurse Angelica (Vitillo) Costa, a Nutley resident who served as the deputy director, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, from 1966 to 1970.
Costa served in the military during the end of WWII through the Vietnam War. She is a 2007 Nutley Hall of Fame recipient. Nurse Costa passed away on August 12, 2002.
The dedication ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, but due to bad weather, the ceremony was rescheduled for Thursday, April 25, at 5 p.m. at the Department of Public Affairs. Nurse Costa’s family will be in attendance. The public is invited.
