NJ Transit bus hits tree, 6 taken to area hospital

KEARNY –

Six people were hurt when a commuter bus struck a tree on Belgrove Drive at 8:15 a.m. this past Monday, police said.

Kearny Police Sgt. John Taylor, traffic supervisor, said the driver of a No. 76 NJ Transit bus heading toward North Arlington told police he was traveling south on Belgrove and pulling into a stop at Woodland Ave. to pick up riders when his brakes failed.

As he tried to slow the bus, it ran into a tree, the operator told responding officers.

Taylor said that six people were removed from the bus with minor injuries and were taken to St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark, for treatment.

NJ Transit responded and towed the bus to one of its garages, Taylor said.

No summonses have been issued and the accident remains under investigation, he added.
