Nancy August 

Nancy August (nee Thomas), 75, died on May 14. Arrangements were by the Thiele-Reid Family Funeral Home, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. The funeral service was held at the funeral home. Interment followed in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.thiele-reid.com.

Ms. August was born in Scranton, Pa., and lived in Harrison, then Kearny, before moving to North Arlington seven years ago.

She was a customer service representative for Mutual Benefit in Newark for 25 years before retiring.

Nancy is survived by two daughters Patricia Knott and Tracey L. August-Wagner and her husband Jerome; grandchildren Michael Joseph Knott and his wife Jessica DaSilva- Knott and Michelle Knott, Joseph Harbac and Andrew August; and great-grandchildren Brianna Bradley and Nicholas and Olivia Knott. She also leaves behind her former husband but good friend Robert August. She was predeceased by her son Glenn August.

Karen Ann Blevis

Karen Ann Blevis, of Maywood, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 13. She was 48.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mulligan Funeral Home, Harrison. Friends may call on Wednesday, May 20, from 3 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Karen was born and raised in Newark until the age of 12. She lived in Belleville and then North Arlington before moving to Maywood in 1994. She worked for Stryker, Tams & Dill in Newark as an office manager from 1984 to 2011. Karen graduated from Belleville High School in 1984. She was an animal lover and a coin collector. She was a kind, thoughtful and extremely generous person who loved her family. She loved all genres of music, classic T.V. shows, especially the 1970’s classics such as the “All in the Family,” “Good Times,” “Barney Miller,” “What’s Happening” and she also loved “The Honeymooners,” “Roseanne,” and game shows such as “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.” She loved going to the Ballooning festival of New Jersey and spending time at the Jersey Shore flying her kite and enjoying sunsets.

Karen is survived by her beloved husband, Jose (Joe) Antonio Luza; loving cousins Walter Shanko and his wife Marie and Carole Shanko; second cousins, Donna and Richard Russell, Walter Shanko Jr. and Kelly Cicchino; her loving mother-in-law, Dora Cordova; her brothers in law, Luis A. Luza, Rigoberto R. Luza and his wife Jean; and sisters-in-law, Dora M. Kasper and her husband Kenny (Buddy) and Milagros (Millie) Luza, along with multiple nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Edward J. Alexander (1998) and Margaret A. Blevis (1989).In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Red Cross, PETA and ASPCA in care of the funeral home in loving memory of Karen.

Timothy DeLuca 

Timothy DeLuca passed away at home on May 13. He was 56.

Born in Kearny, he was a lifelong resident.

Tim was an accounts receivable clerk for Mellon Bank in Little Falls.

The son of Marion (nee Valenti) and the late Joseph G. DeLuca Sr., he is survived by his brothers and their wives Joseph G. DeLuca Jr. (Joanne), and Brian DeLuca Sr. (Eileen). He was also the uncle of Brian DeLuca Jr., Toni DeLuca and Nicholas DeLuca.

Paul ‘Red’ Demnicki 

Paul “Red” Demnicki, of Harrison, entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 10. He was 81.

Born in Hanover Green, Pa., Paul was a lifelong resident of Harrison. He worked as a construction laborer for Laborers Local 112, Harrison, for 30 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of “Red’s Social Club,” East Newark. He was a parishioner of Holy Cross Church, Harrison. Paul served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Maureen “Mo” Demnicki (nee Breen) Paul is survived by his loving children Paul and his wife Jeannette, Tommy and his wife Mary, Theresa and her husband Pat and Patty and her husband Ken; his cherished grandchildren Jessica, Patrick, Paul, Steven, T.J., Jason, Deanna, Monica, Kevin, Megan and Kara; and dear siblings, Joseph Demnicki, Walter and Marilyn Demnicki. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Josephine A. Garing

Born in Hoboken, Joanne is the daughter of the late Anthony and Angelina Procaccino. She lived in Union City until she got married and raised a family in Kearny for 35 years before moving to Manchester.

She was the beloved wife of George of 47 years, the cherished mother of Grant of Lyndhurst and Christian and his wife Barbara (Ruban) of Florham Park, the adored nana of sisters Avery and Rylie and brothers Jack and Peter, and three loving sisters Annette Barnaba (Leonardo), Marianne DeRosa (Rich) and Sharon Vecchi (Dominick). She also leaves behind sister-in- law Jacqueline Falcone (the late Dr. Gerry) and brother-inlaw Joseph Binetti (late Joyce), and many loving nieces and nephews.

George and Joanne were together since the age of 14. They enjoyed spending summer vacations on the beach in Wildwood Crest with their family.

Sorahia Abbud Monteiro 

Sorahia Abbud Monteiro, of East Newark, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 16. She was 38.

Born in Newark, she was raised and lived in East Newark. She worked as an account executive for Montgomery Mortgage Capital, Parsippany for seven years. Prior to that, she worked for Atlas Marble and Granite, Newark as an office manager for more than two years.

She was raised in and attended the Brazilian 7th Day Adventist Church in the North Ironbound section of Newark.

In her free time she greatly enjoyed traveling the world. She cherished her beloved pets, Prissy her dog and Hopey, her cat.

She is survived by her loving parents, Israel Filho Monteiro and Laura Abbud, and her beloved companion, Rich Ogiela. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandparents, John and Esdra Abbud (2011) and Israel and Carmen Gose Monteiro.

Patrick Joseph O’Conner 

Patrick Joseph O’Conner, of Harrison, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 12. He was 70.

The funeral will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, Harrison, on Tuesday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church, Harrison, at 10 a.m. Friends may call Tuesday, May 19, starting at 8:45 a.m. His interment will be in Brigadier General W.C. Born in Newark, he was a lifelong resident of Harrison. He worked for ADT Alarms (formerly Wells Fargo), Lyndhurst, for 35 years, retiring in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion Howard F. Schwarz Post 408, Newark; American Legion Post 282, Harrison; and was a lifetime member of the Wilson Gugelman VFW Post 1302, Kearny.

Patrick served our country in the United States Army and was a Korean and Vietnam War veteran. Patrick is survived by his beloved wife Cynthia Y. (nee Taylor), married for 21 years; his loving daughter Rosina McGuiness and stepsons Steven and Robert Taylor, cherished grandchild Jimmy Taylor and his dear siblings Kathleen Buhler and James O’Conner. He is also survived by his nephew Tristan and niece Janet.

He was predeceased by his daughter Kelly O’Conner. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the family to help defray the funeral costs in loving memory of Patrick.

Sadie Smith 

Sadie Smith, 76, died at home on May 10.

Arrangements were by the Armitage Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral service was held at St. Cecilia’s Church, Kearny, followed by a private cremation.

Sadie was the wife of the late John and is survived by her grandchildren Mandi Woupes-Smith, Chelsie McLaughlan, Ross Hicks and Sarah Hicks. Sister of the late Helen, she is also survived by her daughter Donna.

In lieu of flowers, assistance to her grandchildren would be deeply appreciated.

Taka Yamaguchi 

Taka Yamaguchi, 88, died on Friday, May 1, at Manor By The Sea in Ocean Grove.

Born in Kearny, she was a lifelong resident. She worked for many years in the textile industry in New York City.

Miss Yamaguchi was an extensive world traveler. She loved animals, especially cats and also enjoyed figure skating.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington in Kearny. Taka is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents Hidetaro and Shinako (nee Okumura) Yamaguchi; five sisters Shigeko, Shinabuko, Shidzuko, Tada and Seiko; and three brothers Kadzuo, Tsugio and Mitsuo.
