5 years ago today … Maple Street fire in brutally cold & windy conditions

Some stories are impossible to forget, including this one from Jan. 5, 2018. The wind was fierce, and so the temperatures felt well below 0º — and a fire broke out on Maple Street, just north of Bergen Avenue, in Kearny. Here’s a look at some photos from the fire scene. We were at the scene for about 19 minutes that day. (We had thought we were there for at least 45 — but it was so cold it only seemed that long.) The two affected homes were completely torn down a few days after the fire. (Click on images to see them in larger form.)
